By the time I became a parent, “doctor knows best” was already giving way to a world flooded with online advice, and we were encouraged to do our own research. I recently dug out a Newsweek magazine from 2000 that my dad gave me when I was pregnant with my first.

Along with the Y2K hype about babies being born at the start of a new millennium, a new generation of “informed” parents was hyped up as being able to triage their sick kids themselves, even as many decisions were becoming more complex.

In “Antibiotic Season: The Good, The Bad, and The Guilt,” I talk about the challenge with more decisions.

When I was a kid, antibiotics were prescribed without much thought. Since then, antibiotic decisions have grown more nuanced—which is good. It means we're learning more about the risks and benefits.

Not all decisions are the same. Strep throat’s an easy one—give them the recommended course of antibiotics. It’s the gray-area decisions that are toughest. It’s even harder when you don’t have a trusted clinician to talk through decisions, which is increasingly harder to find.

Even though I’m a pharmacist, when my kid is sick, I want that kind of hand-holding. Dr. Google or an AI chatbot is no substitute for that.

My biggest takeaway from writing this post is how urgent it is that we reinvest in primary care and not expect AI to fill in the gaps—just like we did with the internet.
