Early March // Art handling + art making. So appreciate that time with @duofineartservices and the crew - hard and messy and beautiful work, truck driving, heavy lifting, packing, moving, gentle handling, wall-building work. Sweet and talented friends, and lots (and lots) of giggles. by @meg_morley_

A few moments from this summer’s Museum Practicum class “field trips” around town. Wayne State’s art collection; its mineral museum; Elaine Jacobs gallery featuring Keith Haring; Wright Museum; and Detroit Historical Society collection storage. Loved having the opportunity to go behind the scenes of all of these places and more. by @meg_morley_

Studio // It’s been a while since I’ve shared much here, and with good reason - very little new work to share! Finally making time for some new work for the upcoming Ceramics x Fiber (@ceramics_x_fiber) exhibit, curated by @jessikae15 and @katieshulman. I’m working in collaboration with the extremely talented @ricky.blanding.ceramics.

Ricky has previously explored knit structures using his medium of choice: ceramics. I’d previously played with knit forms using mine, rope dipped in plaster. We’ve come together to see our work in conversation, both interested in the idea of what “knit” means to us and how it can be conveyed in various ways.

The show opens in a little over a week on Tuesday, March 24 and runs through the 28th at the Boyer Campbell Building in Milwaukee Junction, and coincides with the big @nceca gathering in Detroit.

Reception on Friday, March 27! Come see how much we all get done between now and then. ;) taken in 40 W Howard by @meg_morley_

As we lead up to @NCECA, we will be introducing each of the 60 artist pairs participating in Ceramics x Fiber. We are excited to see the results of their collaborations! Follow to learn more. Exhibition information linked in bio. Artist bios in comments.

“It Worked” (Knitted Clay 7): This work was made by knitting clay wrapped in muslin rather than working with slip. It has a true cast on, is made with 1 continuous piece of “clay yarn” and a real cast off stitch.

🌲 // When an artist you admire asks if you can go to Haystack, say yes as fast as you can! Five years ago, I took a short crochet class on Zoom taught by @tarynurushido - I already loved her work so much, and learned what a natural teacher she is. Taryn was invited to teach at Haystack and I was honored she asked me to come assist.

I’ve heard Haystack described as magical, inspiring, and stunning, and it met and exceeded expectations. (Also - remote!) What I didn’t realize when I said YES was that we’d be teaching during a program geared exclusively toward high schoolers called Studio-Based Learning.

Students were expected to be in the studio to learn, experiment and work on projects all day, starting at 9AM til 10:30PM, with a few breaks for meals and artist talks. It would be an intense schedule for anyone! Watching the students work through learning a new skill was incredible - they all handled the challenge differently and ultimately found their own flow.

Other studio sessions included printmaking, metalworking/enameling, ceramics, lamp-making, and glass-blowing, taught by the coolest teachers. Thank you Taryn, Haystack, and, especially, the dozen crochet students who participated in this transformative experience.

Sarah Rose Sharp (@mobilehomesteader) has curated an incredibly thoughtful, meaningful, and beautiful show called Reciprocity, and I feel very grateful to be part of it. The conversations this collection of art is having - between each other, among the group, and with the space - are vibrational and just really lovely. Opens tomorrow, 8/17, in the Samantha Woll Center at the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in Detroit's Block Party from 11AM-2PM. by @meg_morley_

And now, onto the baskets... !!

The range and volume of work produced during last week’s sculptural basketry class at Arrowmont is still blowing my mind, especially considering that this was all entirely new to almost everyone in the class. This group was inspiring - and totally ready to learn, make, and play.

(This is only a small portion of the baskets and sculptures cranked out so more photos are probably still to come! Forgive the makeshift “Photo Booth” picture quality…)

My heart is full after a nourishing week of teaching sculptural basketry at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in TN. This was the first time I've taught a multi-day workshop. I was so anxious, but I couldn't have selected a better group of students. All kind, thoughtful, and interested in the work, and also wildly imaginative, courageous, and willing to experiment, play, and share. And so prolific - the sheer amount and range of work cranked out in just several days was astonishing. (Stay tuned for more pics!) It was wonderful how much we could learn from each other. I'm deeply grateful.

🌸 // Fiber Club* has a show up at the Ferndale Area District Library called Material Motives and tonight is the reception, 6-8PM. We've produced a handful of smaller group shows at libraries and a hospital, and they have been lovely - they provide emerging and established artists with show opportunities, and present a wide range of work to viewers outside of a traditional or institutional art gallery setting.

Jessica Paruch, whipsmart and bananas-organized superwoman that she is, developed and fostered this show along, and the Ferndale Library folks have an amazing art committee that's been incredibly supportive. (Tonight, the library is providing refreshments and live music.)

I got to play cheerleader along the way, and enjoyed watching Jessica's process of wrangling the (many) submissions we received to pull together a show featuring 37 works of art by 26 fiber artists. One of my 'older' woven pieces, Spring, is in the show. It's an anomaly, a framed woven piece you can't touch. The concept was based on a painting, and it pushed me to think a little more about subtle color and texture moves. by @meg_morley_
