I’ve been missing my dad extra as of late. I always miss him, but he’s been on my mind even more than usual.

I found a journal entry of mine that I wrote on my 14th birthday. My dad had recently left rehab and moved out of state so he sent me a letter for my birthday. I wrote about the letter making me cry and said “I love him so much and I’m so worried he’s going to die like [my friend’s dad who died of a drug overdose] did. 14-year-old me was terrified of the reality 30-year-old me ended up living and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that.

One of the last texts he sent to my siblings and I was during a BYU football game. BYU faked a punt and got a first down and Dad texted us: “I’ll be damned if that isn’t the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen other than you kids.” That text sums him up so perfectly.

Now instead of a group text thread, we go as siblings to visit his grave and that really just sucks. I don’t know if I’ll ever come to terms with the fact that he’ll never again send me a text on random Tuesday about how much he loves me. by @meganthayne

This year we had our first Christmas morning in our new home! We also had visits and calls with Santa, our annual nativity, Christmas Eve Mass with my siblings to honor a childhood tradition with our dad, and lots and lots of family time. by @meganthayne
