You don’t need anyone watching for the work to count. Pat Miller, Special Operations Forces veteran turned professional photographer, on doing the work without chasing validation.

“Deeds, not words.” Pat talks about why gaps on his Instagram don’t bother him and what it looks like to keep showing up, now behind a camera instead of in uniform.

This is one of 10 conversations from The Guardrail Series: veterans and first responders sharing, in their own words, what their careers really looked like, the hard parts, the proud parts, and everything they carried in between.

“This isn’t the ceiling.”

Pat Miller says it to himself all the time.

He served as a coxswain with JTF2, running the boats for Canada’s special operations unit. He knows exactly how far he can run before he breaks. He knows what happens after three days without food.

And he still doesn’t know his actual potential.

That’s the lesson. You don’t need to wear the badge to find your edge. Nobody has found theirs yet. Most of us stop at the first wall and call it the limit.

Pat calls it a starting point.

“I want to see where that edge is. Because I know that edge can go further.”

That idea doesn’t belong to special forces. It belongs to anyone willing to test it. On a run. In a gym. In a hard conversation. In a season of life that feels like too much.

The ceiling is further away than you think.

“You can’t just ‘try’ selection.”

Nobody walks in thinking “I’m a fit dude, I’ll do selection.” That mindset doesn’t survive contact with reality.

Pat Miller breaks down what actually separates the people who make it from the people who don’t. It’s not fitness. It’s the people who are in so much pain and still say, “I want to be here.”

If you haven’t caught this episode yet, now’s the time.

You can stay calm in a crisis and still get it wrong with someone you love.

“Nobody’s trying to kill us.”

It can feel like perspective when you say it. But when someone you care about is struggling, it can sound like their stress doesn’t count.

On Friday, Doug @texasspydad, Shaun @shauntaylors1, Pat @megapixelsniper and I @chance_burles talked about getting this wrong ourselves. Being comfortable under pressure doesn’t automatically mean we understand what someone else is carrying or that we’re prepared for the ordinary pressures of our own lives.

Shaun put it plainly: “I needed to hear this conversation before I said that dumb stuff back in the day.”

That’s why we’re having it now.

“Deeds Not Words.”

It’s more than a saying. It’s JTF2’s actual motto — Facta Non Verba.

Pat Miller breaks down what it really meant inside the unit. Your actions demonstrated what you could do. No complaining. No explaining. You just did it, and you rolled with whatever came next.

A beautiful motto. But maybe built for a world most people will never understand, and one that doesn’t always fit the one you come home to.

Today marks 25 years since 9/11. We remember those who were lost, those who responded, and those called into service by what followed.

Their example opens the door to a broader conversation, not only about military members and first responders, but anyone who knows how to be useful in a crisis and struggles to access that same capability during ordinary life.

Danger can provide clarity, give you an objective, a defined role, and an immediate consequence.

Everyday life can be messier. Priorities compete, progress is difficult to measure, and there is no adrenaline forcing us to act.

How do we turn vigilance into awareness?

Urgency into discipline?

Decisiveness into daily follow-through?

How do we stop waiting for an emergency to become our most capable selves?

Meet Pat Miller.

A Special Operations Forces veteran with a background most people will never fully understand, now building a career in photography and mental performance.

In this clip, he breaks down what actually happens during special forces selection. Not the physical grind everyone assumes. The mental game underneath it.

“Selection is 100% mental. Unless you’re unfit. Then it’s 100% impossible.”

When the lights go out, the track falls quiet, and everyone heads home—the real work starts.

After qualifying at Formula Drift Seattle, the pits tell a different story: hoods up, wheels off, crews underneath cars, and Rad Dan wrenching with pizza in hand. No grandstands. No applause. Just teams doing whatever it takes to make the next run.

@adam_lz does a night time qualifier at FD Seattle. One of my favourites from the set. You don’t need livery to feel the velocity.
