“You can’t just ‘try’ selection.”

Nobody walks in thinking “I’m a fit dude, I’ll do selection.” That mindset doesn’t survive contact with reality.

Pat Miller breaks down what actually separates the people who make it from the people who don’t. It’s not fitness. It’s the people who are in so much pain and still say, “I want to be here.”

If you haven’t caught this episode yet, now’s the time.

25 years ago today, the world changed.

I remember September 11, 2001 clearly. I remember watching it happen, the feeling that followed, and the way it changed the atmosphere around an entire generation.
A few years later, I joined the military.

But long before any of that, I had been taught the words.
John McCrae wrote in In Flanders Fields:

“Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.”

When I was young, those words were part of a story I had inherited. War. Sacrifice. Service. Heroes and enemies. I understood them as well as a kid could.

September 11 gave “the foe” a face. For me, and for many of my generation, service became something more immediate. There was a fight. There was an enemy. And there was a responsibility to stand up and do something.
So I joined the military.

Eventually, I lived the words. I took up the quarrel.
Training. Service. Afghanistan.

Somewhere along the way, the simplicity began to disappear.

Twenty-five years and a little more life have given those same words considerably more context.

Hatred is a foe, cruelty is a foe, fear is a foe, indifference is a foe, and the willingness to see another human being as somehow less human is a foe.

These enemies aren't confined to a battlefield.

I've come to understand that carrying the torch isn't only about being willing to fight for what was handed to us.
It's about being responsible for what we hand forward.

Remember the people who stood up.
Remember those who didn't come home.
Remember what was lost.

Don't leave remembrance in the past.
Do something worthwhile with what you've inherited.

I was taught the words.

I believed the words.

I lived the words.

25 years after September 11, 2001, I'm still learning what it means to carry them.

Carry the torch well.
Hold it high for everyone to see.

Meet Pat Miller.

A Special Operations Forces veteran with a background most people will never fully understand, now building a career in photography and mental performance.

In this clip, he breaks down what actually happens during special forces selection. Not the physical grind everyone assumes. The mental game underneath it.

“Selection is 100% mental. Unless you’re unfit. Then it’s 100% impossible.”

Pat’s full episode is live now. Link in bio.
