This is my semi charmed kind of life

The past 12 years have forced me to be strong. Through grief, impossible decisions, NICU and PICU stays. Life has hardened me and softened me all at once.

But today, I got to choose strength. To turn everything I’ve been through into my why. To do something hard, not because life demanded it, but because I wanted to.

For once, strength wasn’t about surviving. It was about living.

Dear sister of mine, I usually have so much to say, but I don’t even know where to start with 10 years. How has it been 10 years?

The grief somehow feels heavy somehow. Explaining to Mac who you are and watching him love you and idolize you without ever having met you is such a blessing. Watching the girls take after you, and seeing how much Harper looks just like you, makes me wish more than ever that you were here.

There’s so much I wish you could be a part of. So much I wish my kids could experience with you. I wish they could know you the way I did, and I wish you could see just how loved you still are. Ten years feels impossible. I miss you more than words can say. by @meghanbmichelle

5 Years in the books. Excited to see what the chapter has in store for our family. by @meghanbmichelle

To think four years ago I was nervous and scared that we wouldn’t have the same bond as mothers who get that golden hour. Thank you for proving me wrong, for always being my shadow, and for gracing our family everyday with your sass, laughter, joy and unwavering love for Spidey. Happy Birthday Mac 🎉 🎈 by @meghanbmichelle

As a NICU mom, you hold your breath long after you leave the hospital. You hold it through every milestone, every cold, every moment your gut tells you something isn’t right.

After Harper’s first PICU stay, I finally started to believe we were moving past the fear that comes with prematurity. I let myself trust that the kids were OK. That maybe I could breathe again.

Then came Mother’s Day 2025.

Harper had a small fever, but she seemed fine. As the day went on, so did the fever, and that familiar breathlessness came rushing back. My gut told me it was more than a virus, but I tried to convince myself it was just anxiety. Just a little PTSD from everything we had already lived through.

By 10 PM, I knew I couldn’t sleep without taking her in.

I drove to the ER fully expecting them to tell me it was nothing serious. But by the time we arrived, her fever had climbed to 105. Within minutes, Harper started shaking. The shaking turned into convulsions, and suddenly I was staring at the same shade of gray I hadn’t seen on her in almost a year. She seized for 45 minutes.

I stood there begging for it to stop while doctors ran a code, brought in the crash cart, performed CPR, intubated her, and placed her on a paralytic to save her life. We spent 12 days in the PICU.

Today marks one year since the worst day of my life. A year spent healing, learning to trust my gut again, and learning how to breathe again after holding it for so long.

Being the mom of a premature baby doesn’t end when you leave the NICU. That experience changes you forever. But this year taught me it does not have to define me.

It strengthened me.
