I moved to Nashville in November 2024. Twenty years old, didn’t know a single person, and not much to do in a drinking town if you’re not drinking.

Then I watched Bull Durham in early 2025 and got obsessed with baseball all over again.

I played as a kid, baseball and softball, until I was 10. I always loved baseball more, though. Two brothers, football with the boys in middle school, skateboarding. My parents raised me screen-free, and I spent a lot of time with my grandpa, who I get my music taste and love for Corvettes from. It felt like growing up in the 80s.

So when I found a 10-team all-male sandlot league with exactly one other girl in it, joining wasn’t as intimidating as it probably should’ve been.

I’ll never claim to be good. I still don’t know every rule. But there’s something about a group of people from completely different walks of life, coming together for one shared thing, the love of the game.

This season, it’s mattered to me to show that this exists. A girl with masculine hobbies who still shows up feminine, with a killer soundtrack. taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @mel.francess

Thanks to sandlot baseball, Mel Frances gets to spend Sundays playing the game she grew up loving.

She manages, catches, and plays right field for the Reba Reds, and she wants more women to know baseball is for them, too. by @mel.francess
