For years I’ve lugged around dslrs and it started to become an impediment to taking photos, especially when I’m just walking the dog. I have like this rule in my head that I’ll only buy a new camera at the point where I feel limited by what I’ve got. I’d been thinking about a smaller mirrorless camera for a while, something much lighter and less conspicuous when you’re wandering the streets, and thought I’d settled on maybe a Nikon Zf, but when I had the chance to hold one it didn’t feel that nice, especially for the price. While I was agonizing over the decision, will I / won’t I, maybe it will be ok, the camera shop guy pulled out a secondhand fuji xt-5 and I had a bit of a play and that was enough to convince me to buy it. I’ve never bought a camera that’s made me want to sell every other camera I own until now. These are just ordinary shots of the neighbourhood where I live but I’m enjoying not being burdened by kilos of camera, and the freedom that it brings.

So here’s a selection out of the first 100 or so frames. I don’t know who old mate is in the first photo. Probably a question for the Catholics out there. My daughter reckons he looks Father John Misty, which sounds like a suitably religious name to me. There’s another photo of my dog wearing some broken glasses we found on the verge. He looks pissed in the photo, because he was, but he’s also a patient boy who tolerates our crap. Thanks for reading this ramble 🖤 by @meldrummo

Happy World Photography Day! 📸

Exactly one year ago today we launched Wild West Foto Fest, to celebrate regional photography and support photographic practice in the WA Goldfields.

So, to celebrate, we’re heading out for another photo walk. Join @mellenburns and @meldrummo for a wander around the Kanowna Heritage Trail, to slow down, have a chat, and see what photos we can find along the way.

We’ll have some photographic prompts (if you need them), but this is a relaxed walk for everyone.

Sunday 30 August | 3.30-6pm
Meet at the Kanowna Heritage Trail information board. Google Maps link in bio.

All ages and experience levels welcome. Bring your camera or phone, water, sturdy shoes and sun protection ☀️ by @meldrummo

“Every time my grandsons come, they straighten all the pictures. And I said, don’t worry about it. By this afternoon, they’ll be back like that…

…I would have stayed here till the house fell down.”
