Hello everyone! It’s @meldrummo here, taking over @regionalartswa Instagram this weekend as Artist of the Month for September.

I’m a documentary photographer and artist, and have lived in Kalgoorlie-Boulder for 25 years.

My background is in earth science and digital cartography. I’m a relative late-comer to photography. Art as a career was actively discouraged when I was growing up, but I’m glad to have found photography, even if there was a bit of meandering along the way. It’s provided me with some amazing experiences and opportunities.

I’ll be posting little moments of Kalgoorlie life so keep an eye out in the stories 👀📸

Big shoutout to Regional Arts WA for all the support they give to regional artists 👏

I’d also like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this ancient and vibrant land that I’m fortunate to live and work on.

From a cold dawn shoot on a tailings dump, to rehearsals, and the amazing final performance on Saturday night, I have loved playing a teeny tiny part, documenting the Kalgoorlie leg of The Beauty Index.

Thanks @annette.carmichael for bringing this beautiful project to Kal.

@carl.heslop39 and @dolmad_e - you were very good sports that morning in August...thank you!

And great job by the Kalgoorlie crew - @dolmad_e @owenahinton @jpervan88 & Corey, along with the Denmark crew - thanks for letting me invade your stage and space.

Life in the desert can be a little stormy, as captured in this beautiful image by @meldrummo⁣⁣
.⁣⁣
There is nowhere else in Australia quite like Kalgoorlie. Unlike most goldmining towns, which last for as little as a couple of years, it sits on the edge of the famous Golden Mile and has an economy which has been driven by gold since 1893.⁣⁣
.⁣⁣
Around 15 million tonnes of rock is moved from the famous Super Pit every year, making this dynamic operation truly worth its weight in gold. Since the Golden Mile’s discovery, 58 million ounces of gold has been mined from it. KCGM’s operations today make it the second-biggest gold producer in the world, second only to China.⁣⁣
