One highlight of this #UNGA was meeting with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the first-ever @unitednations Global Advocate for Human-centric Digital Governance, a role affiliated with the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF). You might know him as an amazing actor, writer and director, but he is also an outspoken advocate for the AI governed “by people and for people."

We discussed the dangers of rapidly advancing AI technologies without proper guardrails, and how we must push to protect human ingenuity and keep our children safe.

He is already doing so much to help people understand the implications of AI for the creative industries and is working on a Netflix thriller centered around the human experience in an AI world.

It is great to have his support for UN’s work towards a digital future that protects rights, advances sustainable development, and works for people everywhere. by @melissarfleming

I was smiling in this photo, but I was actually feeling nostalgic as this was the last #UNGA for @antonioguterres and @aminajmohammed.

It’s been such an honor to serve under their leadership. Both so driven to make our world better for everyone, demanding of staff try harder - to innovative on how we solve problems and to build coalitions for change.

And they championed communications, allowing me and my team to modernize and experiment, continuously growing our global audiences and building a giant global community of @unitednations supporters. taken in United Nations Headquarters New York by @melissarfleming

There is a lot of invisible work that transforms @unitednations Headquarters to host world leaders, civil society and global media for the #UNGA.

A big shout out to my UN colleagues for their extraordinary work to ensure a secure, open space for diplomacy, debate and activism.

To everyone who contributed — thank you.

I am so proud to be serving this great organization along with all of you. taken in United Nations Headquarters New York by @melissarfleming

Today, it is harder than ever to trust the information we are fed by our echo chambers – governed by algorithms over which we have no control.
A handful of companies still dominate and shape our global information architecture, and their priorities remain the same: engagement, profit. Always placed above the public interest. On the other hand, information defenders - civil society, journalists, scientists, academics and others – are still underfunded and under attack.

In 2024 Secretary-General @antonioguterres launched the Global Principles for Information Integrity to foster a more human information ecosystem, and Member States committed to the Global Digital Compact. Two years on, progress has been made, but the work is far from done.

The 2026 Global Risk Report made clear - information risks are more prominent than ever. Combined with the speed of which the information landscape is changing we must act to implement principles into practice.

No one single actor will be able to do this work alone. We need coalitions.

I was happy to see so many Global Initiative members and grantees at yesterday’s Information Integrity Solutions Dialogue hosted at @unitednations Headquarters on the margins of #UNGA 81.

I would like to thank each of the participants for their commitment to the cause of information integrity and for advancing solutions to the challenges we face.

Now is the time for hope, and determination. The solutions are in our hands. taken in United Nations Headquarters New York by @melissarfleming

Time is running out to avert climate catastrophe.
The climate crisis continues to accelerate. Its impacts that were once considered exceptional are now becoming the norm – and those least responsible are paying the highest price.

The only viable roadmap for tackling climate change is to take rapid, collective and global action.

Today, at the @unitednations headquarters in New York, I had the honor to moderate this year’s Climate Summit – where Heads of State and Government, together with key stakeholders gathered to strengthen international cooperation and advance practical solutions to accelerate #ClimateAction.

World leaders are stepping up, showing they are ready to deliver - and then over-deliver, on their Paris Agreement commitments.

It gave me hope for the future of our planet to see the majority of the world is united in taking climate action.

What an emotional moment today at the UN General Assembly opening.
@antonioguterres delivered his final address to the #UNGA General Debate, ending with this personal note:

“On January 1st, when I am no longer Secretary-General, be sure of this:

Wherever I will be, whatever I will be doing – I will keep championing the conviction that peace is possible.

That human dignity is universal.

That the power of law must prevail over the law of power.

And that our common future is worth fighting for.

I will continue to stand up for the values of the United Nations Charter.

And I will never ever give up.”

World leaders gathered in the General Assembly Hall all rose to give him a warm standing ovation.

His principled leadership has touched many generations of colleagues working at the @unitednations, and gained the respect of Member States.

Once again, speaking truth to power, and about power, and about why “The greatest power is not the power to dominate, it is the power to build a future that works for everyone.”

The SDG Media Zone at #UNGA started today!
Policy conversations about the Sustainable Development Goals usually happen behind closed doors.
Our job is to bring these conversations out into the open, and to demonstrate what the #GlobalGoals mean in everyday life.

Since 2016, the SDG Media Zone has done exactly that – turning global commitments into stories the world can actually see.

This week, I’ll have the pleasure of hosting several panels with @unitednations principals, experts, change-makers & advocates from every corner of the world.

Their voices are proof of something we can’t afford to forget: we all have the power to change the world for the better.

None of this happens without our partners.

My deepest thanks go to the @pvblicf for their support over the years, and to @microsoft, who is joining us as a partner for this year’s edition.

Thank you to every media outlet here, especially our SDG Media Compact members, whose support ensures these conversations reach a global audience. taken in United Nations Headquarters New York by @melissarfleming

If you were asked, “What does peace mean to you?”, what would you answer?
Peace, to me, is when every person can live with dignity,
feel that they belong, and have the freedom and opportunity to imagine and build a better future.

I couldn’t have hoped for a better way to mark Monday’s #PeaceDay than through an intergenerational peace circle with inspiring young people working to make a real difference in the world.

As I listened to @versharma, @marymaker_43, @muzoonalmellehan, @lamjonathan_, Sofia, @sanjanasanghi96 and @worldscouting, I kept thinking about the need for us, older generations, to truly see young people not only as those we need to support, or as the leaders of tomorrow, but as leaders of today.

In my @unitednations roles, I’ve had the privilege of traveling to many places affected by conflict and crisis, and of meeting extraordinary young people along the way.

What always stays with me is their determination. Even in refugee camps, even in conflict zones, young people are not simply waiting for their lives to begin. They are already building them.

That is why I truly believe that investing in young people is an investment in their ability to shape their own stories and futures, and in their ability to shape a more peaceful future for all of us.

Of course, for people living through conflict and protracted crisis, the most urgent investment is in peace.

We all have to “push for peace, now more than ever,” as our Secretary-General @antonioguterres has said.

But while we work for peace, we also must invest in the generation that will inherit it. taken in United Nations Headquarters New York by @melissarfleming

What keeps UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres awake at night?

António Guterres’ drive to serve those less fortunate saw him rise from a volunteer in the slums of Lisbon to the highest spheres of politics, eventually taking on the world’s most important diplomatic role. Now in his final months in office, the ninth UN Secretary-General shares his greatest concerns for the world.

On our ‘Awake At Night’ podcast, he looks back on the milestones and setbacks of a long career, reflects on the personal tragedy of the loss of his first wife, and shares why his lasting hope is rooted in the promise of “We, the Peoples.”

Listen anywhere you get your podcasts. And starting this season, you can also watch the full interviews on our UN YouTube channel! by @melissarfleming

Alvaro Lario works to help farmers thrive all over the world.
Growing up in Spain in a family of farmers, his family sold fruits in local rural villages. Now as President of @ifad_org, he is unlocking opportunities for small scale farmers and rural entrepreneurs around the world.

“All of these people are extremely entrepreneurial. They’re extremely creative. They have a lot of willingness and energy. Many times it’s just the lack of opportunity or the lack of means, and I think that’s what makes this job or this role very rewarding.”

On Awake At Night, Alvaro reflects on attracting private sector investment for those projects, on what indigenous groups can teach others about resilience to global shocks, and shares how building one new road can transform thousands of lives. by @melissarfleming
