One wor(l)d. Many voices.🌍

On United Nations Day, we celebrate the people who make international cooperation possible, those who listen, exchange perspectives, build bridges across borders, and turn shared values into collective action.

We asked FAN members and alumni who have worked or interned with the United Nations to describe international cooperation in one word. Their answers reflect the experiences and connections that remind us why working together matters.

We’re also celebrating the conversations that bring people together year after year at the European Forum Alpbach. This year, once again, we were glad to welcome Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, whose participation at EFA26 is a reminder of the importance of bringing global perspectives into dialogue about our shared future.

Different experiences. Different perspectives. One world we share, and a responsibility to shape its future together.

Happy United Nations Day!💙

PART 1 - FRANKFURT

You know that feeling when you invite all your favourite humans to a gathering and everyone gets along like a house on fire? The last week felt just like that in 7 events in Frankfurt and Berlin, with a total of 17 brave young voices (legends) we organised to travel from all over the world. A world that increasingly feels like a house on fire.

In the backdrop of youths taking over cities around the world in righteous anger at inequalities, I was proud that we already built structures to connect over this.

I loved how bright and brave everyone was as everything seemed to go astray outside, from Nepal to Venezuela to Turkey. I loved the sobering and empowering perspectives they brought, especially while parts of the media, literary and publishing industry has found comfort in becoming merely businesses for profit and entertainment, often fetishising the few stories that decry oppression instead of going deeper.

Writers that preach from their podiums and tables about the people and places they write about, without getting their hands dirty, so to speak, without taking risk, without fighting for their fellow writers being persecuted, without pushing for them to be in the room, without creating new oppurtunities or backing new movements, no, just silently counting their money and hoping to avoid persecution. Thankfully many around PEN and sister organisations are not like that, they advocate for the opposite; to use creativity to organise and mobilise and support those who can’t, to wake people up, not put them to sleep. To inspire ‘at a time of universal deciet’, not to sell things.

Its kind of shocking to realise how many people seem to completely ignore or conveniently forget the reality for the global majority outside the grand stages and halls they speak in. Like much of pop culture actually. Maybe they feel it doesn’t concern them (yet) or if it does, it seems to be only intellectually or culturally. Engaging in solidarity symbolically. For luxury basically. It made me see once again that speaking up is important but far from enough and must be followed by careful, sustained organising.

Growing up, I wasn’t lucky enough to have frien

“Words are power, and voices are power. Stories are power,” said @melissarfleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, opening the Publishing Equality: Shaping the Future of the Book Industry panel at @buchmesse 2026.

At a time when women’s rights are facing growing backlash, the #EU4GenderEquality programme brought together publishing leaders and gender equality advocates to explore how the industry can advance equality — both behind the books and within their pages.

“We see authoritarianism rising, we understand very well that women are among the first to be affected. I feel that it is even more important that we join forces in this direction and highlight how important it is for the publishing industry to achieve better conditions for gender equality”, said @gvantsajobava , President of the @intpublishers.

The discussion also marked the launch of the Pledge for Gender Equality in Publishing, inviting publishers to turn commitments into concrete action.

“When publishers and industry associations stand together, individual authors and editors have stronger support behind them,” added Olga Osaulenko, Programme Manager at the EU 4 Gender Equality programme.
