More archive footage to follow. Shot on mini DV at Annesley Bentinck, my Dad’s pit in 2000. Into the light, a coal miner rides the conveyor belt back from the coalface. Excited to unearth mini DV footage I shot 25 years ago at Dad’s pit, Annesley Bentinck. We have hours of unseen images that will be interwoven into the visual tapestry of BACKBONE. Love the colours & dreamlike aesthetic of mini DV format, it gives the men and this place a poetic quality. Heritage doesn’t have to be nostalgic, it can speak to the present and open a space for pride and connection. Over the moon BACKBONE has received National Lottery Project Grant from the Arts Council of England with additional support from Ashfield Creates, BFI Film Hub Midlands and Film Audience Network. Backbone is an immersive multimedia experience that commemorates Ashfield’s coal mining heritage. In 1999, as my Dad was dying from miners lung it was announced his pit, Annesley Bentinck Colliery would close. Retracing his footsteps I documented the final months of the colliery’s life, speaking to miners about what a new life might mean.

Revisiting this documentary film and photography archive, Backbone aims to bring a coalminer’s life alive, commemorating the men, the mine and their symbiotic relationship. Backbone interweaves the past, present and future to tell new stories around coalmining and give voice to its community pride, resilience and the proud men who were once seen as the backbone of the nation.
