I usually perform/release music as 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 — my debut 𝘌𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘴 was released on @chinabotasia. Pedro Oliveira (@pjliveira) and I (as myself) have a release on @bluetapesuk. The musics are very different. I have more work on the way with various friends, including gallery exhibitions, festivals, and live shows.

It’s been an honor to pre-select fellows for the @daad_artists Artists in Berlin Program. Please follow @eyeheardear & @interspecifics — I’m excited for what they’re doing. Lotsa love to alumni fellows @jay_afrisando (and @terry_perdanawati) & @pisitakun too <3

𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴:
I’ll be at @threesound_expo’s label market via @l__kw September 12th-14th + moderating talks with expo artists and broadcasting on @refugeworldwide until then. It’s a musical expo about political disappointment.

Welcome to a showcase of the Berlin-based experimental collective Burre.

Burre represents authentic, radical approach to electronic music, creative alternative club events in Berlin. They promote subjectivity in music through accents on live shows and performance art in their curation.

👀 For this special showcase in Jena, participants of collective will perform with DJ sets, lives and performance, spreading across genres of leftfield, folk, donk, IDM, footwork and industrial. For this issue they bring closest residents of collective: musician @memeshift and performer artist @sima.brig

amygdala live - @kitte.bitte

#GLITCH Featured Artist and our DJ for the evening // MEMESHIFT // See him live June 13th at @zeminberlin //

Morgan Sully (US/DE) is a Berlin-based experimental musician descended from the great American portrait painter Thomas Sully, shaped by an itinerant life spanning the Pacific Ocean from Kalimantan/Borneo, Hawai’i and Southern California.

Morgan’s current practice moves between live electronics, curation, and the thoughtful resynthesis of his sonic heritage: cassette tapes of Sundanese degung and Malaysian pop are filtered through echoes of Autechre and Aphex Twin; footwork and jaipong mutations blessed by the Queen of Keroncong — Waldjinah — live alongside 90s rave mixtapes of desert techno, Chicago house and acid squelch.

Performing as Memeshift, his sets are dense, playful and feral: while The Wire called his debut album Echoes “a gently vaporous hulk of melancholia,” his live sets depart from his braided musical lineages, arriving somewhere between diasporic melayuncholia and archipelagic celebration. by @memeshift

Continuing our collaborations with subtropical sound pushers of the global south we are happy to co-produce Apichat Pakwan’s unique proposal where modern Thai “Isan” traditions meet dub aesthetics, boiled in a sizzling broth of funk and psychedelia . FULL LINEUP:
@memeshift (Hybrid set): Sound researcher Sully Morgan is an active component of the Soy Division crew and L-KW label. Launched in Berlin in 2013, GLITCH was created by Klaas von Karlos (ReVerse Bullets) as a night of experimental electronic and electroacoustic performers working across digital and analog tools to perform and exhibit their work in a cohort of amplified BIPOC and FLINTA voices. In 2016, GLITCH expanded to also operate as a digital label, releasing albums from such as artists as Munsha, Klaas von Karlos, RJ Thyme, Naked Sweatshop, and ReVerse Bullets.

After running ten editions in various venues in Berlin, and one in NYC, the series returned in 2017 with GLITCH/RESET series. Previous acts include Onyx Ashanti, Alain Kronier (These Hidden Hands), Jessica Ekomane, Sofia Portanet, Eilyas, Hamster, Loganic, Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt, K-the-i???, Kris Limbach, Rona Geffen, Rainbow Warrior, Nicolo Sommer (BIINDS), and many more. taken in Berlin, Deutschland by @memeshift

Hi everyone - in case you haven’t heard, me, Taïca and Jan K @_jan_k_ have a 3-part event series coming up later this month called 𝓛𝓪𝓽𝓮𝓷𝓽 𝓢𝓸𝓷𝓸𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓲𝓮𝓼.

This project is inspired by conversations with Bilawa Respati @sastraswara and Khyam Allami @khyamallami on gamelan tuning, cultural bias in software, ongoing conversations with researcher Emma Lo @lo_loaf , the performance-lectures of meLê yamomo @fahrtrichtunglinks on decolonizing southeast Asian sound knowledges and of course, the **slendro synths and 909 kicks** of Gabber Modus Operandi @gabbermodusoperandi (big ups @kasimyn for showing me Oddsound’s MTS-ESP 🖤).

With a deep desire to make these ideas more accessible, Taïca and I were able to apply for a Musikfonds grant (thanks @mxm_kupi for the translation help!) to develop an open-source sample pack of Javanese instruments and tuning files, software instruments (for Ableton Live and Native Instruments), and a PDF guide to the instruments and their musicology. Additionally, we’ve been able to invite 6, fellow trans-Asian artists to interpret this material and share our research/compositions over 3 days of discourse and live-recorded concerts.

These recordings - along with the sample pack, tunings and guide - will form a (free) album release on L-KW @l__kw and subsequent streaming program on Refuge Radio @refuge_worldwide 🖤

SO. We warmly invite you to 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 at our open-studio at Rumah Budaya Indonesia - Berlin, 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 the tunings and sample packs (🔗in bio) and join us to 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 at Morphine Raum for the ✨live recording sessions✨.

I hope you can come revel in the sonorities we’ll share!

Love,
Taïca, Jan and Morgan

P.S. This project is made possible by cooperation with Rumah Budaya Indonesia - Berlin @rbi.berlin and Morphine Raum @morphine_records_raum + funding from Musikfonds @musikfonds.de and the National Arts Council of Singapore. Shoutout @thckit for the sweet illustrations, which you’ll see more of as our project develops ❤️ taken in Haus der Indonesischen Kulturen - Rumah Budaya Indonesia - Berlin by @memeshift

🔮Circular Zone returns next Thursday May 28th, with live performances by Morgan Sully (laptop, electronics, self-built instruments) and Tengal (modular synthesis).

8€ entry // 8pm doors // 8:30pm start

Morgan Sully (US/DE) is a Berlin-based experimental musician descended from the great American portrait painter Thomas Sully and itinerant roots from Southeast Asia. Morgan’s current practice moves between live electronics, curation, and the thoughtful resynthesis of sonic heritage. Performing as Memeshift, his sets are dense, playful and feral — departing from the lineage of DIY rave culture and noise and arriving somewhere harder to name.
https://www.memeshift.com/

Tengal is a multidisciplinary artist, composer, filmmaker, curator-researcher and cultural instigator whose work explores the intersections of sound, technology, moving images, and Southeast Asian cultural histories. Tengal’s projects frequently operate across disciplines—bridging art, science, and society—and manifest as performances, installations, or collaborative laboratories. He co-founded the international music platform NUSASONIC, and his curatorial work with institutions such as CTM Festival, Art Laboratory Berlin, SONICA Festival, PHØNIX16, 20nine30 Berlin, and the Museum of Transitory Art Ljubljana aim to deepen the ongoing dialogue between the Global South and Europe. Using modular synthesis and signal manipulation, Tengal positions feedback as structure, distortion as inscription — where sonic material folds onto itself and destablisizes its own transmission.

What can digital technology learn from musicians’ tuning practices — and how can it better accommodate those actual needs, outside its Western common practice defaults? Hosting @johnkameelfarah @uygurvural_cello_official Vural, Laurel Pardue, and @memeshift to talk about that question Tuesday evening at the Audio Developer Meetup Berlin, held in Ableton HQ.

Pictured: gamelan workshop tuning efforts, Jogyakarta, from a visit there in 2018 with the CTM/Nusasonic crew.

RSVP required; think there are a handful of spots left. by @memeshift

My debut album - 𝕰𝖈𝖍𝖔𝖊𝖘 - is coming out on @chinabotasia April 19th!

A lot of the music on this album is based loosely in and around the idea of ‘echoes’ - the feeling of a music or sound from the past, not the ‘original’ source, but something that has somehow gotten fainter and fainter.

The tracks come from a few different eras of my life as I traversed eastward to the ‘West’ across the Pacific Ocean, Turtle Island, and eventually to the home of @ctmfestival in Berlin.

A few songs encapsulate the naive optimism of music production’s promise facing towards the sounds of UK electronic music in the mid 90’s, as I traveled further away from my childhood home(s) of Borneo and Hawai’i. Within these frenetic compositions, you’ll find ‘echoes’ of Sundanese degung from my mom’s 30-year-old cassette tapes from Malaysia - or rage at the arrogance and injustice of racialized U.S. police brutality we experienced in 2022.

‘Balikpapan’ has field recordings from insects listened to in Margomulyo Mangrove forest, recorded shortly after I returned to Borneo (35 years after we were smuggled out by sampan). My kindergarten school had since been bulldozed and replaced by Pertamina oil company.

I hope this album serves as a signal to other artists drawing from their sonic heritage to make sense of the present and develop their own, crucial voice. Our diasporas are vast sources of knowledge and strength, particularly in difficult times...

P.S. The portrait artwork was done by @el_kamprettoz 🙏 during a @soydivision.berlin rehearsal at @rbi.berlin for a performance of KIAMAT inspired by @senyawa_musik ’s Alkisah. @saphy_vong did the layout while his partner did the write-up - thank you so much. The frame and color palette are from a hand-beaded Borneo mantle my mom made, based on motifs from the Iban of Sarawak, our ancestors in West Kalimantan.🌀🌀
