Progress happens when a city comes together. When you call. When you speak up. When you stay involved. When you keep showing up.

Across Memphis, crime is down, and our community has played an important role in that progress. Because of you, we’re moving forward. The progress is real. And so is the work ahead.

Congratulations to the 24 graduates of the 114th Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Class!
CIT training prepares law enforcement officers and first responders to safely respond to people experiencing a mental health or behavioral health crisis.

In 1988, Memphis developed its own approach to crisis intervention. That approach became the foundation for the national CIT model used today, which is why MPD’s CIT program is known as the Memphis Model.

This class included first responders from the Memphis Police Department, Memphis Fire Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Shelby County Division of Corrections, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Graduates completed specialized CIT training, including intensive, scenario-based exercises focused on situations they may encounter in the field.
We’re proud to celebrate these 24 graduates and their commitment to serving our community with compassion, professionalism, and care.

We gave notice. The violence continued. Now, action is being taken.

The Memphis Police Department, in coordination with the City of Memphis and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, initiated a nuisance closure of Legends Lounge on September 24 following continued violence and criminal activity associated with the establishment.

This is what it means to Sustain the Gains.

Hope. Support. Community.

More than 100 community members joined MPD and local resource organizations for an afternoon focused on supporting survivors of domestic violence and connecting them with resources.

As a symbol of comfort, support and hope, survivors received pillows during the event. More than 100 pillows were collected and donated to the YWCA women’s shelter and Sister Sowing Seed groups.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make Mt. Moriah Station’s first domestic violence resource event a success and reminded survivors that they are not alone and their community cares!

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders who ran toward danger to save others.

We remember their courage and sacrifice, and the families and communities whose lives were forever changed that day.

25 years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Reducing gun violence takes more than responding after a shooting.

It takes a holistic approach, identifying the people and circumstances driving violence. That means using data and intelligence to get ahead of it, and connecting people to resources that can help change their path.

Yes, we hold people accountable when a crime is committed, but we also believe in intervening when there’s an opportunity to make the changes necessary to prevent the next one.

Because the goal isn’t just more arrests.

The goal is fewer shootings, fewer victims and a safer community.

This is the first video in our series exploring Memphis’ Gun Violence Reduction Initiative.
