Since 1983, Men at Work Construction has been a leader in luxury custom home building on the east end of Long Island.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
As we close out the summer, we're looking back at the progress made over the past several months—from the first structural members rising from the foundation to the final levels of steel taking shape overhead.

This project has included a substantial mix of structural steel: W10 wide-flange beams, HSS columns and perimeter members, transfer framing, cantilevered steel, and a 33'-7¾" custom plate girder weighing approximately 7,000 lbs.

What started as a foundation and a collection of fabricated pieces has quickly become a full structural system—each level building on the last and every member playing a role in the overall load path.

These drone shots give a pretty good perspective on just how much has changed over the course of the summer

Previously, we showed our structural shop team fabricating this custom 33'-7¾" plate girder, built from 1" thick flanges and a 1" thick web and weighing approximately 7,000 lbs. Now, that massive member is in place on site, becoming a key part of the home's structural framing.

The girder is designed to carry significant loads across a long span, working as a primary structural member within the framing system. With the surrounding steel and wood framing tying into it, its placement is critical to establishing the load path for the structure above.

Good reminder that what happens on the shop floor is just the first half of the story.

Our field crew is now erecting the uppermost structural steel for this custom East End residence, bringing the primary steel frame to its full height.

With the lower levels complete and the second-floor deck in place, the final phase of structural steel includes the roof framing system—a coordinated layout of wide-flange beams, HSS members, transfer framing, and cantilevered steel designed to support the home's expansive rooflines and open architectural spaces. Throughout the structure, beam elevations, connection locations, and framing geometry are carefully coordinated to integrate with the wood framing and roof system that follows.

Watching this project progress from foundation steel to the completed structural frame has been rewarding. One level at a time, our team continues turning engineered drawings into reality.

More progress to come as we move into the remaining structural areas of the project.

Thrilled to see our Bridgehampton Beach House as one of the lovely houses featured in 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴, published by @betapluspublishing.

This residence is designed on a 90’ by 90’ nine-square grid, with a 30’ by 30’ open courtyard at its center. The courtyard creates a serene cloister-like atmosphere that blurs the boundaries between indoors and out.

We keep returning to the joy of designing this house, particularly the mathematically beautiful two-story porch, which cantilevers from the second-floor volume. ✨

This house also stands as a testament to our never-ending pursuit of light.

The second floor is taking shape. 🏗️

Steel decking is down on the second floor of this ongoing structural install — the next phase of a job that's been built right from the ground up. From the wide flange beams and HSS members below to the deck going on above, every phase of this build has been precision laid out and coordinated by our structural field crew.

As evening settles in, doors open and lights come on. The focus shifts to the table outside, where the day continues a little longer.

Ground floor steel taking shape 🏗️

This structural install features a mix of wide flange beams and HSS members, including W10x19, W10x33, W10x49, and W10x77 beams, along with HSS10x10 and HSS10x5 perimeter members—all set to a T.O. steel elevation of 12’-5”.

With beam runs stretching over 40+ feet in length and a combination of lighter and heavier sections working together, this floor system is built to carry serious load while maintaining a clean, efficient layout. Columns throughout are primarily HSS4x3 and HSS5x4, tied together with 3/8” shear plates, gusset plates, and moment connections to ensure strength and stability.

Additional details like deck support angles (L4x4x3/8) and closely spaced shear studs will complete the system—bringing everything together before the next phase of construction.

Precision layout. Coordinated install. Structural steel done right.

The inevitable weathering of cedar shingles tells this home's story over decades. Storm winds and summer sun gradually transform the surface from honey-colored wood into silvered memory, connecting architecture to the endless cycle of seasons.

Natural cedar shingles tell time through their gradual transformation. Fresh tan giving way to weathered gray as ocean air works its slow magic. Against this ever-changing canvas, we designed white window casings with deep-set sills that cast strong shadows and create moments of architectural beauty.

In our structural shop, we’re fabricating two specialty tube sections measuring 14" × 10" × 30', each weighing approximately 6,200 lbs. These members are being formed from 1" and 2" plate, engineered to support significant loads above.

When structural demands exceed standard shapes, custom fabrication becomes the solution. Precision fit-up, controlled weld sequencing, and careful handling are critical when working with material of this thickness and scale.

Heavy steel, tight tolerances, and fabrication done right.

Inspired by Charles McKim, this Shingle Style house balances a sculpted street presence with a softer, cottage-like relationship to the garden. Inside, traditional proportions meet spare, modern detailing.
