Have you had a chance to listen to this week’s podcast with yet another brilliant co-worker of ours? This week, we have Mary Spencer Veazey, who is the Engagement Manager at @daystarcounselingministries, as well as the author of a wonderful book, Cul-de-Sac Crossroads: Navigating Life’s Twists and Turns in Your Twenties with Courageous Clarity.

You’ll want two copies of this book—one for your college or young adult child and one to read alongside them. Mary Spencer, thanks for writing this book and thanks for joining us today to talk about the complexities and hope that can be by @mencervz

two years ago today my first book came out into the world. 🩵

always still am surprised and so grateful when people reach out and say they’ve read my book. It’s wild how people find books so shoutout to the internet for all of its weird algorithms.

Cul-de-sac Crossroads began as a hopeful handbook for people in their twenties and has morphed into a book that I think more people not in their twenties have read. you can write a book about one thing but the reader gets to decide what it’s about for them wherever and whoever they are and that’s the magic of books.

anddd if you haven’t read it, it’s not too late! buy a copy on Amazon today and start reading tomorrow if you so feel lead. 🤪

grateful for this book because it reminds me of how awesome my people are and also introduced me to a lot of my favorite people. who knew 50,000 words could turn into all of this? excited for what’s next, but for now happy birthday CC! love you mean it. 📚🥳🤍🫶🏼

Are you stuck in a job you don’t love, feeling drained, anxious and like you’re just going through the motions? It’s okay to wonder if there’s more. In her blog, Mary reminds us your work doesn’t define you.

Jesus cares deeply about the work you do and wants you to find peace and purpose in it.

Comment “WORK”
and we’ll send you the link to Mary’s blog where you’ll discover how to stop running on empty, find God’s peace in the chaos, and partner with Him right where you are.

Well. I still have not fully been able to process the day that was yesterday. I was one of five people in the mental health world who got to spend the day learning all about the amazing helper that is @daystarcounselingministries. To answer your first question, yes, it is just a special as you think. In fact, I’d argue even better in real life. Even though I didn’t get many pictures because I was trying to stay fully present, getting to sit down with heroes like @melissatrevathan @sissygoff and David from @raisingboysandgirls was a dream come true.
I got to learn all about the Daystar model and how intentional every single piece of their hiring, their fundraising, and their building plays into each staff member living out their ministry. I left with a full heart, a full journal, and 1 million ideas.

What @mencervz is doing with this training grant is inspiring.

Icing on the cake- I got to gift Sissy and David my book and tell them about my heartsong of spreading the message of restoration from the sandpaper moments in my counseling office and thank them for the wisdom they give me both as a mom and as a clinician.

It felt like a once in a lifetime day with an impact that I can take into every single day of my counseling ministry. What a gift.

It's that time of year where thousands of 18-year-old high school grads are packing up their lives and moving to college.

Some of those girls are getting ready for sorority rush - half of them have no idea what to expect and are excited and the other half do know what to expect and are scared.

Ten years ago, I was a part of the "don't know what to expect and is excited" crew.

I knew not a soul at Auburn University and couldn't wait to make friends through a sorority.

I didn't expect to get cut from most of the sororities by the third round.

I didn't expect to be whisked through chapter rooms, have 5 minute conversations with a stranger, and then be voted on based on the limited information they had gathered about me.

I didn't expect to cry on bid day - not tears of joy but tears of pain because I didn't get the sorority I thought I wanted.

But then I did what we all do at times: I made it seem like I got what I wanted because I was too embarrassed and disappointed.

I thought I'd drop the sorority and maybe try again next year. I surprised myself when I stayed.

And here's what happened.

I made friends with girls from all over the country. Smart, brilliant, funny girls.

We had rap battles and poetry slams and danced like nobody was watching.

I got involved. I wound up getting voted to be the Vice President of New Member Education - yep, the position that oversees the freshmen. I got to talk to girls that didn't get the sorority they thought they wanted.

We had 100% initiation that year.

My little sister joined my sorority. She told me before rush that she was going to do something different but then she talked to some fun girls in my sorority and changed her mind. It seemed like her kind of place.

I graduated, moved on, and I'm 28 now. Being in a sorority wasn't my identity in college, but it sure was a bonus.

So if you're going through rush this fall, I'm thinking of you. It may be a hard week, but God can work it for your good.

If you need extra encouragement, I'm sending out a 5 day series starting 8/7 of encouragements/prayers for you and your loved ones while you go through rush. You can sign up through the link in my bio! 💌 by @mencervz
