I’m excited to announce that I have passed my licensure exam or EPPP! This accomplishment allows me to obtain my LPA license in Texas. Since this exam is also required as a part of my comprehensive exams, I’m excited to say I’ve also advanced to doctoral candidacy within my program! This has been such a large, personal and professional milestone for me. I couldn’t have accomplished this without my wonderful support system and community whose faith in me never faltered. In a moment of vulnerability, I’ll say that this was one of the more difficult challenges in my PhD program so far but I’m very proud of myself for persisting regardless. Nevertheless, as many psychological professionals know, this exam is a test of perseverance rather than clinical skill. It is unjustly difficult and has discriminated against many people of color. So, while I’m here, I’d like to take the time to highlight @radicalpsychs , an organization fighting to make obtaining licensure more equitable, and accessible. Please go support their work! by @mentalhealthwithmo

Recently, I have been incredibly grateful to participate in programs aligned with my values of social justice, service, and collective responsibility. First, last Friday, I had the honor and privilege of leading our Diversity Day event – a program planned, executed, and hosted by the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. students (The Clinical Psychology Diversity Committee) at the University of Houston (UH). The goal of this event was to educate students, faculty, and staff about clinical and research considerations for working with underserved, marginalized populations. Although planning the event wasn’t easy, ultimately our program was a success! Second, I also honored to serve as an invited panelist at the Mental Health Panel hosted by the UH Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. It was wonderful to discuss mental health among college-aged Black women and dispel myths or stigma about seeking mental health support. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, I understand the importance of supporting other Divine Nine organizations. I love giving back and I look forward to supporting more student-led initiatives in the future! taken in University of Houston by @mentalhealthwithmo

I’m very excited to announce that I’ve successfully passed my proposal; another milestone passed! This means that a committee of experts in my field determined that my dissertation proposal contributed to the field and was both methodologically and theoretically sound. Thus, im allowed to advance to the next step in the dissertation process. I’m grateful to committee members for their support. On another note, it is not lost on me that I proposed a dissertation regarding both the traumatic and resilient experiences of Black women, during Black History Month and during a time where systemic oppression is heightened. Despite every attempt, Black folks have always resisted, imparting that resilience and cultural legacy to our descendants. Even through attacks on education and DEI, I’m grateful that I can investigate a project that centers the nuanced and complex experiences of Black womanhood. Right now, understanding the ways in which we are resilient seems extremely important. I’m excited for the next step on this journey. Swipe to see things that kept me motivated during the proposal phase ā¤ļø #dissertationproposal #blackacademic #younggiftedandblack by @mentalhealthwithmo

✨ Our new study is officially published online! ✨

This paper was truly a labor of love (iykyk šŸ«¶šŸ¾)—and I am deeply grateful to my incredible collaborators who made this work possible.

This study advances our understanding of how derailment, posttraumatic stress, and resilience unfold in the context of a global public health crisis—and underscores the importance of culturally grounded perspectives on healing and strength.

This past weekend I had the honor of my presenting my first paper and participating in my first research symposium at the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies annual convention. While I was initially nervous, it ended up being a truly amazing experience. I’m grateful that I was able to present with esteemed scholars on racial trauma and emotional wellbeing among Black adults. Black mental health matters and deserves intentional investigation. I’m thankful to be apart of a team who cares about the healing Black people as much as I do. I’m looking forward to continuing the work! #abct #abct2025 taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @mentalhealthwithmo

One of the most rewarding parts of graduate school is the ability to support and mentor undergraduate students. Last week, I had the honor of attending the ā€œGet Psychedā€ event sponsored @uhabpsi and @uhpsichi. The goal of this event was to connect undergraduate students with graduate students , faculty, instructors, and registered student organizations who were all in the field of psychology. I’m so thankful that I was able to give back to undergrad students and support them in the way I was supported. There is often a ā€œhidden curriculumā€ of graduate school so I’m glad I could spend time dispelling uncertainty. Mentorship and service are deeply important to me so I’m grateful that I serve as a support system for students! ā¤ļø taken in University of Houston by @mentalhealthwithmo

People who know me well know that APA Division 45 is my research and academic home so I was beyond excited to attend another Division 45 conference! During this this year’s conference, I was honored to speak on my first panel about rupture and repair in cross-racial supervision dyads. Thank you to my amazing colleagues and co-panelists Kaevyn Maple, M.S. , Elijah Murphy, M.A., L.P.A , Madison Bibbs , Olivia Cruz. , and Michaela Jones for making this panel so fantastic. I’m grateful that I was able to solidify old connections and make new ones. In all, this conference was filled with community building and fellowship. I’m grateful to be a part of a division that cherishes the beauty and importance of human diversity. I can gladly say, it was great to be home again! taken in University of Michigan by @mentalhealthwithmo

Recently, I had the honor of attending the inaugural APA Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Interdisciplinary Summit. At this summit, strengthened relationships among several behavioral health fields including psychology, counseling, social work, and nursing. We attended seminars that taught us how to collaborate and use our skills to help our various communities. Most of all, we fellowshipped and connected with each other. The most important thing I learned? There’s no limit to what we can do when we work together. In all, this summit was amazing and I can’t wait to continue to connect with everyone in the future! taken in Chicago, Illinois by @mentalhealthwithmo

As 2024 comes to a close, I’d like to take some time to reflect on some of my professional accomplishments throughout this year! This year I:

1. Attended and presented research at the Black Graduate Conference in Psychology (BGCP) and went to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the first time!
2. Passed my comprehensive exams! Comprehensive exams (aka ā€œcompsā€) are formal exams required by Ph.D. programs that test all knowledge learned in one’s program. Passing these exams symbolizes that one has mastered the coursework in the field and qualifies a student to begin the dissertation process.
3. Began my first external practicum (aka rotation), where I am able to continue to enhance my clinical skills.
4. Planned and spoke at 2 panels regarding graduate student life and admissions as a Black graduate student. I am thankful for the undergraduate student circle chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) at UH for this opportunity!
5. Recieved my first fellowship via the APA Minority Fellowship Program (MFP)! Becoming a APA MFP fellow is a dream come true!
6. Attended and presented research at the annual Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) convention! Attending my first ABCT convention was eye-opening and going to Philly for the first time was fantastic! I met so many incredible people and I look forward to attending again in the future.
7. Graduated with my M.A. in Clinical Psychology!! In my Ph.D. program, students earn a M.A. after defending a master’s thesis and completing specific hours of coursework.

2024 was one of the best years (thus far) in my Ph.D. program. I am grateful for what I have accomplished and I cannot see what is going to come next. Happy New Year, everyone! by @mentalhealthwithmo
