What does stability make possible for a child?
The October edition of The Beacon is here; and this month, we are looking at that question from several directions. We explore why stable access to education, food, and housing matters from the earliest years of a child’s life; share Mentor A Promise’s experience at Xavier Mission’s Back-to-School Family Success Fair; and highlight an important reminder as Election Day approaches: experiencing housing instability should not silence your voice. From early childhood development to community connection and civic participation, these stories share a common thread:
Stability creates opportunity.
Opportunity to learn.
Opportunity to grow.
Opportunity to participate.
Opportunity to thrive.

Sometimes, we don’t know what’s waiting around the bend.

Like a river, life rarely moves in a straight line. There are unexpected turns, moments when we feel stuck, and stretches where we can’t quite see what comes next.

Our first original animation from Mentor A Promise explores that journey; and the lessons, joy, and possibilities we can discover along the way.

Brought to life through the words and voice of Lesia R. Zivkovic, illustrations by Camila Elizondo, animation by Ajay Ramnarine, and original composition by Barbara J. Weber.

A story about continuing forward, even when you can’t see beyond the next turn.

Follow the river and see what’s waiting around the bend. https://youtu.be/6t3Zh2iFHKg

What happens when you’re pursuing a college degree without a stable place to call home?

In a new episode of The Bells I Hear, Alisa sits down with Amy Hawley Alvarez of Teachers College to talk about housing insecurity among college students in New York City; from couch-surfing and shelters to temporary housing.

It’s a reality that can be easy to miss, but one we need to talk about.

Listen to the new episode and help us bring this conversation forward. https://youtu.be/RmdOm1aUO0A

We are back, together.

Mentor A Promise is returning to in-person sessions for the new school year.

That means more time around the same table. More books opened together. More art, cooking, music and movement. More conversations. More opportunities to learn, create, and just be together.

But the best part of coming back isn’t on the schedule.

It’s seeing a familiar face walk through the door.

It’s picking up where we left off.

It’s getting to say, “Good to see you again.”

Here’s to another school year of showing up for one another.

We are ready to be back.

What is the McKinney-Vento Act, you might ask? Well we have the answer. Swipe through to see what federal laws protect unhoused youth and their rights to education. Because when everything else in a young persons life feels uncertain, school should be the one place where they still have a sense of connection, routine, and community. by @mentorapromise

Unlock Their Best Year! — On August 29, we welcomed children from our programs to our Back-to-School Family Success Fair, designed to help every child begin the school year prepared, confident, and excited to learn!

At this event, we connected with families with school supplies, clothing, health resources, educational supports, nutritious food, and community services in one trusted place! Ghouly even made an appearance!

We want to thank the Xavier Mission (@xaviermission) for hosting and partnering with us for this very important cause! We wouldn’t make this happen without their support!
