Exciting News! @mentorapromise is beginning a new installment called “Terms Explained” where we’ll discuss and define housing terms that might be a little confusing for you!

So what is Affordable Housing?

It isn’t just “cheap housing” if that’s what you’re thinking. We know the term might seem a little misleading at first, but thats why we’re here! Affordable Housing is one of the most misunderstood terms in housing conversations.

In New York, it generally refers to housing that costs no more than 30% of a household’s income, helping families afford other necessities like food, healthcare, and transportation.

In this episode, Cynthia Amodeo - a licensed mental health counselor and the CEO of Barrier Free Living - breaks down why, what needs to change, and how her team is creating real pathways to safety and stable housing. Sitting down with Chris Banks felt less like an interview and more like talking to someone who’s been carrying his community on his back for years. He grew up in East New York, and you can hear it in the way he talks about housing, stability, and what it means to actually show up for the people who raised you.
