Four wordmarks, four very different businesses and the thinking behind each.

Working across industries keeps me curious. It broadens my references and helps me create identities with their own character. I start by closing my laptop. I walk, visit shops and galleries, look through books, sketch and write. I’m looking for a connection that gives the project a direction. Then I take that thread online. If I start by looking at other brands’ finished identities, I risk starting with someone else’s solution. Making those first connections is a deeply important part of my process. With AI speeding up the generation of ideas, I’m more protective of that thinking time than ever. New business or rebrand, the aim is the same: find what makes it distinctive and give that a visual.

I haven’t shared my work in this way before. Swipe through to see what shaped each one.

A location wordmark for Thistle Suites Royal Garden, the first of four @thistlesuites addresses in Edinburgh. Offering serviced apartments with the ease of a boutique hotel stay, the business needed an identity that conveyed heritage and experience while giving each location its own presence.

The typesetting establishes a simple hierarchy: small uppercase lettering anchors the Thistle Suites name, while a larger italic serif gives the location prominence and character. A familiar typographic pairing, with the contrast in scale and rhythm doing the work. Distinct colour palettes also help to differentiate the addresses, while the consistent typographic structure holds the identity together as the business grows.

I knew early on that I wanted the @solisspray wordmark to feel human. Offering in-studio, UV-free spray tanning, Solis creates natural-looking colour through a service rooted in personal care.

The starting point was the artistry behind the tan: the hands, movement and care involved in every application. That informed the fluid letterforms, soft curves and intentionally imperfect finish. The tilted axis adds energy, giving the wordmark warmth and personality while retaining a premium feel. Across the wider identity, a fine, speckled grain echoes the mist of a spray tan. It adds a soft fuzziness to taken in Scotland by @merakiconceptstudio

A very exciting next chapter for @everythinglooksrosie: her second book is officially on its way.

Following her first book, Slow Seasons, Rosie returns to the rhythms, rituals and folklore of the Celtic year with Gloaming, published by @bloomsburycooks this October.

Where Slow Seasons explored the full turning of the Celtic Wheel of the Year, Gloaming leans into its darker half: from Hairst and Samhain through the Howe o’the Year to Waretym and the earliest signs of spring.

It brings together Scottish folklore, seasonal stories, cosy crafts, soul-nourishing recipes and slow living activities, all rooted in the idea that winter isn’t simply a season to push through. There is still magic to be found, if we know where to look for it.

When I worked with Rosie on her new website at the end of last year, the project was about creating a proper home for everything she has built over the past decade: her writing, her photography and the community that has grown around it. It’s particularly lovely to now see her second book become part of that world.

And it’s a beautiful one at that, with illustrations by @floradewarprints and, truly, no better hands for the book design than studiopolkadesign.

We’re very proud to share this project and an exclusive feature published by Homes & Interiors Scotland.

Once divided into bedsits, this four-storey Georgian townhouse has undergone a comprehensive renovation to create a practical and welcoming family home. The layout, comfort and performance were transformed while the building’s original character, from its ornate cornicing and fireplaces to its masonry and timberwork, was carefully retained and restored.

At the heart of the project was the owners' wish to create an enduring family home: "We wanted to create a space where everyone can always come home."

The result brings renewed purpose to every level of the house, including guest accommodation in the extensively reworked basement, alongside significant improvements to heating, insulation, services and protection from damp and water ingress.

Thank you to @block_nine_architects for their collaboration, @zac.and.zac for the beautiful photography and @homesandinteriorsmag for telling the story so thoughtfully.

We’d also like to thank @merakiconceptstudio for bringing this project to life on our website and for their continued support in developing a richer, more useful online home for BANN.

If you haven’t visited the website recently, we invite you to take another look. We’ve added our latest work in progress, expanded the information about our services and shared more insight into how we work, helping clients make a confident, informed decision when choosing the right construction partner for their home.

A real joy to spend part of this summer working with @heathermcdermottjewellery on the next phase of her website.

I first designed Heather’s website back in 2021, and it’s been brilliant to watch her business grow since. In that time, @squarespace has evolved enormously, but so have the demands placed on an e-commerce website.

This latest phase was really about strengthening the foundations. Behind the scenes, that meant plenty of spreadsheet work: restructuring collections, refining product data and reorganising the catalogue to give Heather far more flexibility in how her jewellery is presented, discovered and shopped.

Five years ago, this level of structure wasn’t nearly as important. Today, it’s fundamental, not only to create a better customer experience, but to help search engines and AI platforms properly understand, categorise and surface your products.

From now on, I’ll be working with Heather every six months to keep the website moving with the business. Because increasingly, I don’t think of a website as something you design once and leave alone. It needs to be reviewed, refined and optimised as collections change, technology develops and the way people search evolves.

As I approach a decade in business, some of the websites I’ve designed are now approaching that age too. If yours hasn’t had a proper review in a while, I’m now booking website optimisation projects for January 2027.

I can’t even begin to express my gratitude to Rachel, Amanda and the entire team at @rarebirdsbooks for the trust, openness and generosity they brought to this rebranding project. Collaborations like this don’t come around very often.

An absolute privilege to create a new visual identity for one of the world’s most distinctive bookshops: an independent bookshop in Edinburgh and the cult book subscription championing brilliant books written by women.

In a world increasingly shaped by AI, we found ourselves returning to one question: what does it really mean to create?

Rare Birds champions human creativity through writing. My role was to champion it visually. Together, we wanted to build something that couldn’t simply be replicated. A visual identity with its own personality, its own quirks and its own system. One that belongs entirely to Rare Birds.

It’s a privilege to continue supporting @campbellsofbeauly as the business continues to grow its reach around the world.

Working alongside the team each month, ongoing website management is about far more than maintenance. It’s about ensuring their @shopify store evolves alongside the business, from launching seasonal collections and refining the customer experience to supporting major product launches throughout the retail calendar.

This month’s highlight has been preparing for the launch of The Highlander Boot, created in collaboration with @rmwilliams. A beautiful partnership bringing together Australian bootmaking expertise and Highland heritage.

Want to be among the first to see it? Sign up via @campbellsofbeauly’s homepage and receive early access on July 1st ahead of public release.

Immensely proud to have been working with @pyrusbotanicals on the launch of their 2026 Pavilion workshop series, ANTHOMANIA.

Anthomania describes an intense, often obsessive, love of flowers. In Fiona’s words, this series “is a little self-indulgent”, but beautifully so.

It’s an opportunity to explore flowers deeply. Up close and personal. To move beyond the idea of a “pretty bloom” and instead study form, history and meaning. Anthomania invites us to look closer, to dissect what we see and to reinterpret each flower through different creative mediums. As the season gently unfolds, a new bloom is spotlighted and explored.

From tulip printmaking and peonies in oils to rose remedies, sweet pea casting and viola embroidery, each workshop focuses on a single flower, set within the sanctuary of the PYRUS Walled Garden.

Bookings are now open. Gift vouchers are also available. taken in PYRUS by @merakiconceptstudio

@rosiesugdencashmere’s machine embroidery service has taken off this season, and it’s been a joy to support its rollout. I introduced this feature to Rosie’s website earlier this year, and the response has been phenomenal.
From delicate initials to full names, every stitch turns a bonnet, blanket or cardigan into a thoughtful, one-of-a-kind keepsake.

What a joy and privilege for @everythinglooksrosie’s new website to be one of my final projects of 2025.

Rosie Steer is a writer, photographer and creator with a decade of work behind her. The author of Slow Seasons: A Creative Guide to Reconnecting with Nature the Celtic Way, published by Bloomsbury, she crafts gentle, seasonal content for old souls who long to slow down, simplify and return to the rhythm of the year.

This project was about creating a true home for everything she makes. In a world where we’re encouraged to scatter ourselves across endless platforms, Substack for writing, Instagram for community, third-party tools for events, it becomes harder for people to truly fall into your world. To stay. To explore. To belong.

A website, done well, becomes the anchor. The place where your community can spend time, not just scroll. Where your voice feels whole and uninterrupted. A brand world for the people who love what you create.

So we gathered everything: nearly a decade of WordPress content, reaching all the way back to 2016. We migrated it, reformatted it, re-categorised it. We created seamless integration between her new website and her Substack, where her writing continues to be monetised and where her most loyal readers gather. She’s now easily contactable for future collaborations and enquiries, too.

One of my biggest joys is the fully bespoke Celtic clock and calendar: a custom interactive component built using hand-coded HTML, CSS and JavaScript to show your exact season in real time, adapting for both hemispheres. Hours of design and development went into it (I’ve included the script in the second frame), and it’s become one of my proudest pieces of work this year.

Rosie’s first seasonal gathering of Yule is now live: a wreath-making workshop at @lannanbakery on Dec 15. Reserve your place on her website.

If you’re a creator ready to build a brand world of your own, my next project start dates are:

One of the best parts of being a Shopify Partner is showing clients just how dynamic their online store can be. For @campbellsofbeauly, we took full advantage of Markets to give their American audience a completely tailored Thanksgiving experience last week: refreshed visuals, US-only promotions and content timed perfectly to their season.

This is the power of @shopify when it’s used strategically: one brand, multiple markets, each getting an experience that feels made for them.

If you’re ready to take your website beyond a one-size-fits-all approach, the next available start dates are:

• Feb 9
• Feb 23

It’s been a pleasure supporting and championing @buffcs across both of their Edinburgh locations this year. With St Ninian’s closing on 16 January, now’s the moment to book if you’ve been wanting to experience it before the doors close.

The good news: Edinburgh’s best manicure studio isn’t going anywhere. The full team will be reunited on East Market Street, and the energy there is only set to grow.

Looking forward to continuing my work with @buffcs in 2026; plenty of exciting things ahead.
