Two grounding visits to @sayuwon and Bulguksa Temple. Gyeongju, you are magical.

Favourite thing about Tadao Ando’s work is the contrast: such heavy, monumental concrete, yet always designed to frame and make space for nature.

A few favourites from @lyonandturnbull’s Contemporary Art auction, taking place this Wednesday, 12 August.

I was #invited to preview the sale and these are the works I kept coming back to, a mix of artists I already knew and a few new discoveries.

John Bellany, Woman with Mackerel

Probably the artist I knew best going into the exhibition. Bellany grew up in the fishing community of Port Seton in East Lothian and the sea, fish and fishing communities became a huge part of his work.

Woman with Mackerel is unmistakably Bellany, a wee bit strange, a little unsettling and full of symbolism. Definitely one of my favourites in the sale.

Charlie Ward Tjakamarra, Untitled

Charlie Ward Tjakamarra was a Pintupi artist associated with the Western Desert art movement. His paintings are connected to Country and Tingari stories, using repeated lines, circles and pathways rather than depicting landscape in the way we might traditionally expect.

This was one I really wanted to see up close, the amount of movement created through such a simple palette and repeated marks is completely mesmerising.

David Donaldson, Japanese Girl

This immediately caught my eye because it reminded me of @nievesgonnzalez’s portrait of @lilyallen for the West End Girl album cover.

Completely different paintings, made 45 years apart, but there’s something there! And I always love when an older work unexpectedly makes you think of something completely contemporary.

Jonny Niesche, Astronomy Divine (Pink Halo)

A much more contemporary one. Australian artist @jonnyhonky makes work that sits somewhere between painting and sculpture, often playing with mirrors, reflection and really saturated colour.

This is SO good in person. The mirrored surface means it changes depending on where you’re standing and what’s around it so you essentially become part of the work too.

Frank Beanland, Emerald in Cadmium Yellow and Deep Blue

Frank Beanland studied at the Slade before moving to Cornwall in the 1960s, where his work became increasingly abstract and focused on colour, light and repeated marks.

I’m always drawn to a bit of colour so naturally this caught my eye. I also love that the title basically te taken in Lyon & Turnbull by @jemmarathore

Woke up and headed north for a life-changing leek and potato pie, a few pints and a clean sweep defeat at Gin Rummy. Spent the afternoon among some beautiful trees and the biggest rhododendrons. Saturdays well spent. taken in Dunkeld and Birnam by @jemmarathore
