We have heard many concerns regarding ‘E-Bikes’ in Meridian Township, specifically the behavior of the operators and safety concerns of the community. We have been contacting the operators of these vehicles and discussing the safety of their actions and taking enforcement when appropriate.

We would ask parents to have conversations with their children about bicycle, e-bike, and small electric vehicle safety, the importance of wearing helmets, and appropriate operation. Whether the operator is an adult or a juvenile we will continue to stop and talk to anyone that is creating a safety concern in the community.

There is confusion about what an e-bike is. E-bikes require pedals and have a motor to assist with propulsion. Electric vehicles without pedals could be defined as either an electric personal mobility device (small electric dirt bike, segway, scooter, etc) or a moped/motorcycle depending on the size of the electric motor. E-bikes, electric personal mobility devices, and moped/motorcycles all have different rules, but there is one constant. They all need to be operated safely.

Thank you to the owner of Henry's Place in Okemos, Henry Kwok. Henry was kind enough to share some food and friendship with the Department.

It was very nice to receive a warm meal during a cold day. Our staff was very appreciative. by @meridiantwppd

Attention college students...MTPD is hiring! We are looking for college students who are interested in learning more about the law enforcement field to work as police cadets. Our cadets get approximately 20 hours of work every week and we work around your class schedule. You will get a firsthand glimpse into law enforcement as our cadets work hand and hand with our officers daily. Our cadet program has been used as a precursor to sponsorship through the police academy and as a gateway to full-time employment as a Meridian Township Police Officer. To apply, please visit: https://www.meridian.mi.us/Home/Components/JobPosts/Job/160/186 by @meridiantwppd

Construction sites are interesting to children and adults alike. They can be even more interesting when they are at a normally safe location such as a school. Currently there are multiple school construction projects planned and underway in the area, such as the project on Kinawa Drive at Okemos Road.

Construction zones may look like a playground for some, but they contain many dangers such as partially completed unstable walls, floors, electrical, holes, and many others. For your safety, please avoid entering construction areas and discuss with your children the dangers of entering one of these areas. Construction sites are marked as dangerous and have fences to protect you from what is inside. by @meridiantwppd

This sign and blue lines on the pavement mean that the parking spot is reserved for individuals with a disability. The parking spots are designed to make it easier to get in and out of a vehicle, and to reserve area around the parking space for people that require the use of mobility aids. While the parking spots may sometimes be empty, it does not mean that it is okay to use the spot even for a moment. A citation for parking in one these areas is expensive and could result in your vehicle being towed.

MTPD is looking for volunteers to help us enforce parking in these areas. If you are interested, please signup here:

Congratulations to Officer Chrissy Scaccia on her retirement from the Department.

Chrissy worked for over 25 years providing service to the community. She worked in many different assignments, but excelled as the school officer for Haslett Public Schools. It was clear from the number of school staff, current, and past employees that were present at her gathering that she had an impact on a great many people.

Congratulations again on your retirement! by @meridiantwppd

We still have steering wheel locks available for free at MTPD if you have a Kia or Hyundai vehicle. The locks were provided by Kia due to the unfortunate trend in stolen automobiles.

Please stop by our front desk to get one, it will only take you a couple of minutes. by @meridiantwppd

It has come to our attention that someone is spoofing our telephone number so that it appears we are calling you. The caller is requesting payment for an outstanding warrant, or possibly contempt for missing a court date.

Phone and online scams usually follow the same format: Tell you there is a problem, demand money from you to prevent criminal charges, and they give you a time limit to make a payment. If these things are happening, its most likely a scam.

The individuals could be doing this for many different agencies in the area, not just us. If you receive a call like this ask for their name and tell them you will call them back.

Be careful out there. by @meridiantwppd
