A power house session with @haricharanmusic - Absolute bliss to track this artist - He preferred the Vanguard V13 @vanguardaudiolabs into the @rupert_neve 511 with 90Hz rolled off and some Silk for texture -> @inwardconnections theBrute (phew) 🤯 finally finished it with some Tape Saturation with the Oxide Tape from @uaudio - Not to forget our superfast engineer @jonnytitus - We were just too happy with the output !

Recording the VOICE is an art by itself - Various factors to key in are tone, mic and pre compatibility, the song and its dynamics(MOST IMPORTANT IMO), riding the gain knob at times, the voice by itself - too many factors. In the end it was inspiring 🙌

The first time Sanjai and I sat down to work out what this song was going to be.

He played a few options. This was the one I loved.

We agreed that afternoon to keep it stripped down. Guitar and strings, nothing else. The song had already waited nineteen years. It didn't need help, it needed room.

Everything on the finished record started here, in this room, on a phone. taken in Chennai, India by @mervintthomas

The words, in full, since they deserve to be read and not just heard.

This poem was written in 2007. Dragons, mermaids, pirate ships, a boy who could fly. Then a job, a family and a wedding ring, and the whole thing turns without ever raising its voice.

I set it to music that same year on six chords and an old laptop, and then sat on it for nineteen years. Which, for a song about time getting away from you, remains either very on theme or spectacularly bad admin.

The line I keep coming back to is not the chorus. It is "but some days I remember that little boy, in a simple land, with his simple joy." That is the whole song. Not a wish to go back, just an acknowledgement that he is still in there, somewhere behind the inbox.

Words by Rohan Tharyan.
Produced by Sanjai Shine, who also played guitar and sang backing vocals.
Mixed and mastered by Mervin Thomas.

Growing up is inevitable. It was always the plan.

You get the degree, you get the job, you pay the bills on time. You learn to stand in front of a room and say something useful. You look after people, and animals, and inboxes. Nobody asks whether you feel ready, because readiness was never on the form.

Slide one is that. Research, teaching, the NGO, standing in the cold holding a sign because some things are worth being cold for.

Slide two is the other thing.

.

Chile, jumping for no reason. My PhD graduation, where I had earned the right to wear the gown and immediately ruined the photograph. New Year's Eve in Cardiff, alone, until a friend flew in from Holland so I wouldn't be. Forty years old with my face in an ice cream cone, in Cardiff again, not caring who was watching.

The second set is not a break from the first. It is what makes the first survivable.

Somewhere along the way we decided seriousness was the proof of adulthood, and that silliness had to be outgrown rather than budgeted for. It doesn't. You learn the boundaries, you read the room, you don't throw tantrums in meetings. Within all of that, there is still plenty of room to be ridiculous with people who love you.

Some days that child comes back, and I am glad she can.

Greetings and welcome to my organised chaos of a life.

Tried a viral Gen-Z trend, I miserably failed, but 10 points for effort. Not because the trend is brilliant, but because you give these soul-less algorithms what they want and, apparently, it's chic to question the inanity of it all and then take part anyway.

What follows is an unreasonable number of slides proving I have never once picked a lane. Not a strategy. Just what happened.

New single out. The Death of Peter Pan. More on that at the end.

Enjoy the mini drama movie trailer!

Ancient artefact. A mixtape from the late 90s- early 2000s. Handwritten in blue ink, neatly? Side A opens with Lou Bega, you remember that horribly sexist song ‘’A little bit of Monica by my side….”? (Feminist in me screaming now).

On side B, we have Peter Andre, Ricky Martin and then…Guns ‘N’ Roses’ – November Rain. Robbie Williams also appears twice, because once was clearly not enough.

People assume musicians grew up on good music. I grew up on Steps and 98 degrees and I turned out (mostly) fine.

An actual peer reviewed paper in the Journal of Individual Differences, written with Ewa Szumowska and Małgorzata Kossowska in Poland. It is about rumination and brooding. We named it after a Monty Python song, and those who know me will not be surprised.

I also listen to deliberately sad music for pleasure. The paper says this is adaptive, so I am considering the matter closed.

Speaking of sad music, the lyricist of 'The Death of Peter Pan' introduced me to 'Creep' in 2006, and that began a twenty-year Radiohead problem I have never especially wanted to solve.

Ten years later I was at their show in Berlin(Lollapalooza, 2016). Second encore, two songs from the end, a song they cannot stand and had barely played in years. They played 'Creep'.

Most people travel or go home over the winter break. I went to Lesvos, Greece to volunteer at Camp Moria, then the largest refugee camp in Europe and one of the most inhumane. Built for 3,000 people, it held more than 20,000 at its worst.

I came home and started Rethinking Refugees. Nobody plans that. The second photo is our first event poster, Kraków, 2018. Almost ten years on, it by @mervintthomas

It's out. The Death of Peter Pan. Written in 2007, released in 2026, which I am reliably informed is not the industry standard turnaround.

Everyone who has heard it so far has told me they loved it on WhatsApp. I am grateful, truly. I would just gently point out that WhatsApp is a private messaging app and Spotify is not reading it.

So if you do like it, the version that actually helps is this. Put it on your story and tag @taritamusic. Or send the link to one person who has never met me.

Independent artists have no marketing budget, only friends with phones.

Music was always there growing up.

In 1988 I was photographed posing with a pair of drumsticks, which was apparently enough evidence for everyone to conclude I was a drummer.

By 2006 I had progressed to actually being in a band, and that year we played our first outstation gig with the Flabbergasted Tequilas, just before I left for my Master's, and the song was slowly coming to life.

And then there is 2026, when I found myself back on a stage singing Radiohead, which feels rather fitting given that Thom Yorke is perhaps a poet of pathos, an identity I carved out for myself, thanks.to my dad making that comment after reading my poems. And then this song carries the vaguely ominous title "The Death of Peter Pan". Something eerily beautiful about that, and a little bittersweet, because the song is in its own strange way about the inconvenient discovery that Peter Pan cannot stay Peter Pan.

The lucky part came when I went digging through old emails and found the original recording, having spent many years unaware that I was sitting on it.

And then I looked at the file. It was an mp2. Yes, it is that old. 20 March 2007 was the day I finally finished the song and sent it to the mastermind behind the poem.

What you are hearing underneath all of this is that recording, made on my laptop in 2007 with no editing, no mixing and no production of any kind, just me and a guitar, so you are getting exactly what existed then, static included. Listen carefully and you will hear a whole stanza that did not survive, largely because squeezing the word exhilaration into a song turns out to be harder than it sounds.

Nineteen years later it is sitting in a queue waiting for a stranger to approve it. Out any day now.

You can talk about acoustics all day… but sometimes, it’s easier to just hear it. 🎧

Same room. Same sound.
Just before and after acoustic treatment.

The idea isn’t to kill the room or make it completely dead. It’s simply about controlling the reflections you don’t need, while letting the room still feel natural.

Hear the difference for yourself. Call us at 98843 59730 and let’s make your room sound great !
