Welcome to Sponge City, USA. Miami, FL. Biscayne Bay. Corals are great and all, but let me tell you I am bullish on sponges. Along the Venetian, saw some of the largest loggerhead sponges I’ve ever seen. Under jet skis and bridges, on pilings and ropes. A turbid rainbow of color in the murk. Don’t call it biofouling, call it biofabulous 💁🧽🪸🌇🌈 by @mescalien

Yesterday while searching for a series of staghorn colonies (found em!) off 9th Street Neon Reef with @diversparadisemiami we came across an absolutely massive ‘rat king’ of ghost nets. It was probably 8’ in diameter and 4’ tall, weighing a couple hundred pounds. Hero of the day goes to Divemaster Gabi @theyellowdesk who single handedly removed it and swam it back to the boat where it took the whole DP team to haul it aboard. We spent the return trip hacking and cutting it up into smaller pieces. The amount of invertebrate life living inside was impressive and a little sad to see them caught up in the crossfire. It isn’t always clear what trash can be accidentally ‘good’ habitat, but hundreds of pounds of plastic ropes and fishing line is definitely not good for the surrounding environment. A mass like this can be an entanglement danger for sea turtles and if broken loose becomes a destructive synthetic tumbleweed crushing corals as it moves. There were a bunch of large gorgonian colonies knocked down nearby around it and I assume this behemoth bumbling around was the culprit. The irony of a baby octopus scrambling out of the nets once on board while the plastic yellow fluid container stamped w an octopus logo was not lost on me. Tbh it looked like it may have even originated from elsewhere in the Caribbean. Big props to @diversparadisemiami for going above and beyond when it comes to being stewards of the local reefs they dive.

The beauty of Neon Reef is how it has quickly become a community managed site. A network of local divers are keeping track of coral health, anchor damage, and trash. w the help of @neonreefdoc @urbanparadiseguild @surfridermiami @dave.conrad1 @patricklouisart @vitru.venus @everglades.mike and the hundreds of Dolphins and Rainbow swimmers that regularly cross it. Diving from shore makes removal of such a large piece of debris a serious challenge, so it was great to be able to haul it off by boat. DP runs trips to the @thereefline and Neon Reef every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in case you don’t want to schlep from shore. by @mescalien

Does Miami Beach’s nearshore Neon Reef have what it takes to become a shore-diving Mecca for wide-angle photography (the way Blue Heron Bridge in Palm Beach is a Mecca for macro muck diving)? I think it does. 45 mins underwater yesterday w @diversparadisemiami and it was hard to take a bad photo. There’s lot of great macro opportunities too. Plenty of weird fishes. Corals hard and soft, great and small. Some of the great star corals (Montastraea cavernosa) must be many decades old. Absolutely wild that they’ve been living just a couple hundred yards off one of the most popular beaches on the planet and yet remained a secret for so long. Find me another site w more gorgonian diversity, I’ll wait. This should be a high priority area to protect from boat traffic and beach sand smothering! by @mescalien
