🪸 A great day for the reef! We were able to salvage two dozen uprooted gorgonian octocorals from Neon Reef on Miami Beach and relocate them. These gorgonians had been knocked over by a large abandoned fishing net (“ghost net”), that had drifted across the reef. These displaced soft corals are native to Neon Reef where they provide important habitat for fish and marine life.

This mission was authorized under an environmental permit issued by FWC and led by marine biologist and coral expert Colin Foord @mescalien of @coralmorphologic on August 3rd, 2026.

A HUGE thank you to @diversparadisemiami for taking us out and helping us make this reef rescue mission happen!

The Gorgs were safely gathered and placed on the boat for a quick ride a few blocks south to their new home on the Reefline, an artificial reef right off of 5th St. While on the boat the corals were kept wet by our marine team with buckets of fresh ocean water. Now secured, the replanted gorgonians should be flourishing again soon :)

The only traffic jam we want to be in 🪸🤿

Back in May, SeaKeepers assisted Colin Foord of @coralmorphologic and @thereefline in out-planting 69 purple candelabra gorgonian fragments just offshore of Miami Beach near Neon Reef. The corals were harvested from nearby reefs as part of an effort to build one of the largest hybrid reef projects in the world, using resilient, disease resistant urban corals to rebuild reef habitat lost over the decades.

Colin joins us next on Voyages of DISCOVERY, where he goes deeper into this work and what it takes to grow and protect a reef from scratch. It’s also worth noting that The ReefLine recently paused its coral out-planting program due to high water temperatures and elevated bleaching risk, a reminder of just how delicate this work is and why it depends on careful, ongoing monitoring.

🪸 A great day for the reef! Yesterday we were able to save two dozen uprooted Gorgonian Corals from Neon Reef on Miami Beach and relocated. These corals had been ripped out by a large abandoned fishing net drifting and moving across the reef. At least one colony of Gorgonians was estimated to be 20 years old!

This mission was granted an environmental permit and led by marine biologist and coral expert Colin Foord @mescalien of @coralmorphologic. Do not try this at home, it is illegal without a permit.

The Gorgs were safely gathered and placed on the boat for a quick ride a few blocks south to their new home on the Reefline, an artificial reef right off of 5th St. While on the boat the corals were kept wet by our marine team with buckets of fresh ocean water. Thanks to some lucky sudden water temp cooling, the replanted gorgonians should be flourishing again soon :)

Thank you to @diversparadisemiami for taking us out and helping us make this reef rescue mission happen!

Full video of the process coming soon 🙌

The Tacoma is a 165-foot steel freighter intentionally sunk in February 2002, resting in 20 feet of relief. Sitting in excellent condition and still fully intact, this wreck offers an incredible dive.

Because the Tacoma isn’t frequently visited by local dive operators, there’s a great chance of encountering large game fish and thriving marine life. 🐟

We highly recommend diving this site on Nitrox to maximize your bottom time and make the most of every minute exploring this impressive wreck. 🤿

⚠️Next Tacoma Dive:
October 11th @ 10AM

Nitrox highly recommended
Advanced Open water (or greater) required

A Community Series 🪸 Episode 8 🫧 Part 1: In the lab

Miami is one of the most unique 🐋 and diverse cities above and underwater

I couldn’t be more impressed and humbled by the ongoing brilliance and effort of @coralmorphologic @coralcitycamera

Did you know that the immune system of a coral has hundreds and thousands of different microorganisms on the coral itself just like humans? 🐡

Drop a comment on when you think the city of Miami will be fully underwater? 🌊
