SZ Team joins our friends at @studioearchitecture and @metaamo in celebrating the Lummi Nation’s completion of ‘Maechen Aleleng’.
.
Thank you Jan & Matt for touring us through and sharing more about the design of this inspiring community housing village.
.
‘Culturally-Centered, Permanent-Supportive Housing & Wellness w/ Wrap-Around Services’
.
The site layout was designed to foster connection between residents and is comprised of five clusters of six tiny houses each, with a small gathering space and fire pit in the center of each cluster. The clusters are arranged around a large central covered outdoor gathering space, where traditional salmon pit cookouts and other community events will be held. Other outdoor amenities include a community garden, a half basketball court and a nature walking path.
.
All the homes are built in a factory and delivered to the site mostly complete.
.
Location | Lummi Nation, Bellingham, WA
Project Type | Multi-Family Residential
Number of Units | 30
Size | 288 SF Residences + 1,055 SF Community Center/Laundry Facility

NEWS / Fluid States
.
Very honored to share that our community work in the Pacific Atolls has been recognized with an iNTA 2025 Tropical Architecture Award. The “Housing Futures in the Tropics: Resilience, Sustainability, and Action” conference and competition received entries from all over the world that explored solutions for climatic imperatives, problems, and opportunities in tropical and subtropical regions.
.
FLUID STATES is a circular economy dwelling-ecosystem for low-lying atolls spanning ecology, urbanism, architecture, and resource supply-chains. Culminating 12+ years of on-the-ground design research and volunteer work in Micronesia, it was born from co-solving the problems we saw in front of us, from the mundane (leaky roofs, termites, and corrosion of imported materials) to the generational (shrinking cities, sea-level-rise, disappearing traditional ecological knowledge, and community health issues like diabetes). Learning from but reimagining traditional knowledge in modern ways, we aim for triple-bottom line sustainability with emphasis on the low-tech, that is designed for both now (ground-based and permanent) and for the coming future (floating and adaptable).
