I was working (at a water company) only 5 miles outside of the city while my mother and boyfriend at the time were both working in DC. My ex ended up walking out of the city into Crystal City, literally. I don't remember how my mom got out. I remember driving to pick up my ex in Crystal City and seeing the black smoke rising from the Pentagon into the sky. It's been 25 years and that day is seared into my memory. I even remember my former boss at the time being annoyed with me because I had to leave to pick up my daughter from daycare because they were closing early (no duh). I remember him asking me if there was anyone else who could pick her up for me so I could stay and I told him "no, the only other two people who could pick her up are trapped in the city." He reluctantly and begrudgingly let me leave work. As if anyone is going to be calling to discuss why their water bill was high that day - no one gave a damn. We were all glued to our tv's.

This is the 25th anniversary of that terrible day and it hit me the other day that their are people who don't even remember because they were either too young or not even born yet. That tragic day brought this country together in a way I've never seen before or since. It didn't matter what side of the political fence you sat on, we were all Americans and we all we hurting. How far we have come from that unity. 💔

We will not forget. The Trade Center Towers, The Pentagon and a random field in rural Pennsylvania. We will not forget. by @metallichicki
