This weekend the @coblackartsfest had its first Culinary Art Experience at @uncorkedkitchen.

This was a magical night where I was able to cook soul food for over 100 people with two other amazing chefs, @tajah_i and @classikchops. I also got another chance to work with a huge inspiration mine and friend @soulfoodscholar.

Couldn’t have done it without my two close friends @barbarac_bge and @zak.todd. Was a dream come true working with y’all.

I’m constantly trying to find ways to connect my love of cooking to my fine art and I feel like this was a great step in the right direction. Thank you all so much for the support.

A year ago I lost one of my best friends. I still can’t believe it’s been a whole year without you, Grandma.

I still go to grab my phone to call you so we can talk for hours about anything and everything.

I still hear your quick quips and jokes in my head all the time.

I still hear the sing song way you use to call me “Mamita” whenever I’d walk into the room.

Lately I’ve found myself sitting outside surrounded by nature and listening to the birds you used to love to sing along with. Oh, how I wish I could sit on your porch with you again. With your favorite pair of birdwatchers binoculars. Sitting at a your little table adorned with fresh buttermilk biscuits and muscadine jam made from the grapes in your garden.

#ThrowbackThursday to a beautiful evening at the @dumuseum celebrating “Indigenous Gastronomy: Our Connection to Family, Tradition, Place,” an exhibition featuring the incredible work of @metaphoricalmuse

Guests had the opportunity to experience Jazz’s exhibition before gathering for a conversation between Jazz and me, moderated by Jeanne of the Indigenous Film & Arts Festival. Together, we explored the connections between food, history, family, culture, identity, tradition, community, and place, and how those threads are reflected through Jazz’s art and our relationships with the food we inherit, prepare, and share.

And what a turnout! Natalie, Curator of Collections at the University of Denver Museum of Anthropology, shared that it was the best-attended event she’s seen during her time at the museum. ❤️

A huge thank you to Jazz for sharing her beautiful work and perspective; to Jeanne and the Indigenous Film & Arts Festival for guiding such a rich conversation; and to Christina, Natalie, and Dena at DU for all of their work bringing the evening together.

Indigenous Gastronomy: Our Connection to Family, Tradition, Place
The University of Denver Museum of Anthropology is pleased to partner with The International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management to present this Indigenous Film & Arts Festival art exhibit.
While external forces often seek to erase traditions, food is a powerful force that keeps identity and memory alive. As cultures interact and intertwine, new cuisines arise, founded in tradition while adapting to new environments, ingredients and techniques.

Creole cooking is perhaps the quintessential embodiment of the creation of a unique cuisine. We are pleased to present an exhibit by artist Jazz Holmes @metaphoricalmuse celebrating her Creole family’s food traditions. by @metaphoricalmuse

Food has always told our stories: where we come from, what we’ve carried forward, and how generations before us turned land, labor, creativity, and love into something worth gathering around.

I’m honored to serve as the evening narrator for the Colorado Black Arts Festival’s Culinary Arts Experience, an immersive three-course dinner celebrating the foodways of the African diaspora and the contributions of Black farmers here in Colorado.

I’ll be joined by Chef Tajahi Cooke, Chef Vikky, and Chef Jasmine Holmes for an evening exploring Afro-Caribbean, West African, and Southern Creole culinary traditions through food and storytelling.

Even better, this gathering supports the @coblackartsfest’s year-round arts programming, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Black farmers across Colorado.

Come hungry for the food, the history, and the stories behind both.
