Big night out. Rough morning. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s just a hangover.

But methanol poisoning can be easy to miss at first and symptoms may not appear until hours after drinking.

If you’re getting worse rather than better AND especially if your vision starts to change or you’re struggling to breathe DO NOT sleep it off.

🚨 Get medical help straight away and tell them you’re concerned about possible methanol poisoning.

Treatment is possible, but catching it early matters.

Share it with the people you travel with. For more info, follow @methaknow

“You look happier lately…”

Maybe it’s because the message is reaching more people.

Every person who learns the signs.
Every traveller who knows the risks.
Every person who shares the message with someone they love.

That’s how awareness becomes action.

We want MethaKnow to reach the places where it can make a difference: airports, destinations, travel communities and more travellers around the world. 🌍✈️

Where should we take the message next?

Tell us below, tag someone who needs to see it, or simply share this post.

You never know whose life it could help protect.

kinda chic to take the conversation offline ✈️

What started online has now taken us to @manairportuk , speaking to travellers face to face about methanol poisoning, the signs to look out for and what to do if something doesn’t feel right.

We’re so grateful to @manairportuk for supporting the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (@fcdoservices FCDO) ‘Know the Signs’ campaign and helping us bring this important conversation directly to travellers.

Awareness is only powerful when people know what to look for.

So, if you’re travelling, take a moment to #KnowTheSigns, and share this with someone you love before they go. You never know whose life that information could help protect 🙏🏽

How much did you really know about methanol poisoning before Simone?

For most of us the answer would probably be, not much.

Bethany was there with Simone when she became seriously unwell, and like so many people, neither of them knew enough about the risks of methanol poisoning or how difficult it can be to recognise.

We know to be careful with food and water when travelling. We think about sunburn, scams and keeping our belongings safe.

But how often do we think about the safety of the alcohol we’re drinking?

This is why we’re sharing Simone’s story, not to scare people, but to make sure more people have the knowledge we wish we’d had.

👆🏼 Watch Bethany’s “Put a Finger Down” and see how many you can keep up.

Learn the symptoms. Know the risks. Know what to do.

And most importantly, share this with someone you love who travels. 🤍

One share could mean someone knows what to look for when it matters.

The holiday can change in a moment.

Most of us go away thinking about where we’ll eat, what we’ll drink and who’s going to regret that last round the next morning 🍹🌴

What we don’t think about is the possibility that something we’ve consumed could contain methanol, because nobody expects a holiday to turn into an emergency.

We’re sharing this because knowing the warning signs could make a difference when it matters most.

Save it. Share it with the person you travel with. Send it to your group chat.

Because the best holiday story is one you get to come home and tell.

Know the risks. Know the signs. Look out for each other.

Five seconds. That’s all we’re asking.

Methanol poisoning is rare, but when it happens, the consequences can be life-changing, or even fatal.

So before that first sip, take five seconds.

Check where your drink came from, whether you saw it opened or poured and if anything looks or feels off.

And look out for your friends the same way you’d want them to look out for you.

Simone was walking and talking when she arrived at hospital. Within just a few hours, she was struggling to breathe.

Bethany and Simone were among around 20 people poisoned by methanol after drinking at a hostel in Laos.

Possible symptoms to look out for:

🧠 Brain & cognitive symptoms
• Brain fog
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Difficulty thinking clearly or feeling like you’re not functioning normally

👁️ Vision changes
• Tunnel vision
• Blinding or unusual lights
• Changes to your eyesight

🫁 Breathing problems
Difficulty breathing can be a severe symptom and needs urgent medical attention.

Other symptoms can include:
• Stomach cramps
• Diarrhoea
• Vomiting

⚠️ Methanol poisoning can look like a bad hangover at first - but can escalate quickly.

⏰ Time matters. If you suspect methanol poisoning, get to a hospital as soon as possible.

If you’re travelling, stick to sealed/canned beverages and avoid spirits where you can.

📲 Send this to someone going travelling.

Follow @methaknow to learn more about methanol poisoning and our campaign.

Comment, share and DM us with any questions. ❤️

Would you know if the drink in your hand contained methanol? 🍸

It could look completely normal.
No strange colour.
No unusual smell.
No obvious warning sign.

So how would you know?

The uncomfortable truth is: you can’t tell by looking at a drink.

And that’s part of what makes methanol poisoning so dangerous.

Swipe through to learn more about the risks, how methanol can end up in alcoholic drinks, and what you can do to reduce the risk.

We’re sharing this because methanol awareness shouldn’t come after something goes wrong.

If this is something you think your friends, family or fellow travellers should know about, share this post with them or save it for later.

Because the more we understand about methanol, the better equipped we are to recognise the risks.

Margaret shares the warning signs of methanol poisoning - and why knowing them could save a life.

Kirsty’s mum, Margaret, wants young people travelling abroad to understand the symptoms and know when something isn’t right.

Key signs to look out for:
🍸 Feeling dizzier than usual and feels worse over time
🍸 Visual disturbances or problems with your eyesight
🍸 Breathlessness
🍸 Stomach pain and nausea
🍸 Confusion or changes in mental state

Look out for your friends, if a friend seems drunker than you’d expect, get them to a hospital as quickly as you can.

Knowing the signs and acting quickly can save lives.

If you’re heading abroad, or know someone who is, please share this advice with them.

Help us spread the word, know the signs and look out for each other.
