Big night out. Rough morning. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s just a hangover.

But methanol poisoning can be easy to miss at first and symptoms may not appear until hours after drinking.

If you’re getting worse rather than better AND especially if your vision starts to change or you’re struggling to breathe DO NOT sleep it off.

🚨 Get medical help straight away and tell them you’re concerned about possible methanol poisoning.

Treatment is possible, but catching it early matters.

Methanol poisoning is rare, but when it happens, the consequences can be life-changing, or even fatal.

So before that first sip, take five seconds.

Check where your drink came from, whether you saw it opened or poured and if anything looks or feels off.

And look out for your friends the same way you’d want them to look out for you.

Methanol-contaminated vodka has been found on the shelves of licensed Melbourne bottle shops, according to a new study by UNSW Sydney and Curtin University. Methanol can cause blindness, seizures, or death.

Bethany Clarke started a petition calling for methanol safety warnings in airports and schools after she and her best friend, Simone White, suffered methanol poisoning at a hostel in Laos in 2024, and Simone passed away. More than 27,500 people have signed.

What are the most important safety tips for women travelling abroad?

We asked Bethany, founder of the @simonewhitemethanolawareness campaign, to share the five things she always does to stay safe while travelling.

Her advice 💬

- Keep travel insurance documents accessible and share with someone you trust

- Make sure someone knows exactly where you’re travelling and your plans

- Avoid spirits abroad and choose sealed drinks to reduce the risk of methanol poisoning. Remember: say NO to free drinks.

- Carry essentials such as cash, a power bank and a data plan so you’re prepared if something goes wrong

- Be mindful of strangers, holiday romances and situations that could leave you vulnerable to drink spiking, theft or other risks

Bethany’s advice is shaped by personal experience. Her friend Simone tragically died from methanol poisoning while travelling in Laos.

She now works to raise awareness so other travellers have the information they need to stay safe.
