I have completed a new (and neat looking) banjo, constructed with a walnut neck, salad bowl body that I bought second hand, and a goat skin I got from @rhythmtraders - this banjo took a lot of trail and error to get it just right but I’m really proud of how it turned out and how it looks, especially the fret position markers on the fingerboard (which more fretless banjos need) - this banjo is currently for sale at @artichoke.music for $500!

Things I’ve seen - and a thing I wrote:

In the midst of June descending - there are green things and a weight that has us in its grasp - there are days where adorned is a crown of salt-water-beads decorating sweat wiping brows - there are evenings where a porch-swing-perch is for longstanding lungs to inhale smoke made with sharing in mind, carried in slow drags and chopstick-finger posture - there is a sun to warm maiden-voyage passage spent arm-in-arm and step-by-step together - in the midst of shadow retreating necessity we will be empty canteens and thirsty mouths wilting in the sunshine - and together we will be waiting on a warm night for the wind to stretch out its hand and ask for a dance - to dance free as windswept seeds hoping for a soft place to land! by @mfox.artwork

Here’s a bit of noodling in fDGCD tuning, my new gig is I provide entertainment for local Alaskan Malamutes - me and my dad did a chili cook off at Savory Spice here in Portland (we came in second which is neat) and I loitered and played banjo👍🐌🪕🪿🪕

Here’s another one of my recent banjo builds - a folk art banjo featuring a skull shaped headstock, carvings throughout the neck, loads of pyrography, and a tackhead box body. This one feels and sounds amazing and is also quite portable which is nice - it also just looks pretty neat.

I just completed this minstrel banjo!!! It’s definitely the most legitimate seeming banjo I’ve made thus far, the neck is made from walnut and decorated with pyrography - the head is an Irish bodhran I got recently, it’s got an impressive size 14” and a goat skin head - I’m very pleased with how this big guy turned out❤️🪕❤️

I have just completed my first gourd banza build inspired by physical artifacts and depictions of banjos played by enslaved peoples (Haitian Banza, Sloan Strum Strum, Creole Bania, Old Plantation Banjo etc) - I opted for simple construction for the instrument such as the flat headstock with leather cord nut (which gives tension to the strings without requiring an angled headstock). There are some improvements that will be made with future instruments - but overall in quite pleased with how this guy turned out🪕❤️
