To,
My dear 6-year-old Mihir,
Look how far we’ve come!!! From not getting a dupatta to wear at a wedding, to speaking of weddings that don’t support us. It’s been a journey, and I sincerely hope the ride wasn’t too troublesome.

My dear Aksh @akshdge ,
Thank you for letting me into your world and trusting me. It’s been a long journey together, and it brought us here. Eternally grateful to you, and so excited to keep growing alongside you.

My dear Shiraz @barahdari ,
Auntie-sexually is how we should all live. I can’t thank you enough for simply agreeing to be part of this. You trusted me like a blind person would, I don’t take that lightly.

My dear Ayesha @ayesha.parikh ,
I think it’s time we let everyone know it’s truly a love affair. ❤️

It’s been a terrific Wedding Season!!! Glad to know all of ya’ll are meri taraf se 🫰🏼

Very queerly yours,
M

Sangeet night at Art & Charlie brought to life ‘Wedding Season: आप किसकी तरफ़ से?’ a debut solo by Aksh Diwan Garg (@akshdge)✨

From dancing and dhol to gossip over pani puri, the experience of a Sangeet at a North Indian wedding was brought inside the gallery space - an experiential extension to our current exhibition.

The evening couldn’t be possible without the insightful talk on marriage folk songs by history researcher and storyteller Sandesh Awdan (@sandesh_awdan). A heartfelt thank you to Shiraz (@barahdari) and Devika Narain & Company (@devikanarainandcompany) for the dhol surprise and fitting dance performance. Aksh Diwan Garg (@akshdge) debut solo ‘Wedding Season | आप किसकी तरफ से?’ is a continuation of his famed ‘Wedding Series’, and also the last before he moves on to the next chapter in his practice

These oil paintings are a narrative series set in North India weddings. Rendered in warm pinks, purples, and sun-drenched yellows, the canvases are populated not by the bride and groom but by the guests. Aksh observes the wedding not as a celebration he belongs to, but as a theatrical performance he has always watched from just slightly outside the frame.

The exhibition takes its name from a deceptively simple exchange, not to answer it but to inhabit its ambiguity and find something luminous there. To make art from that question is itself an act of resistance. Because in a country where the Supreme Court, in October 2023, handed the question of queer love and queer persons’ right to marry back to the Parliament and the Karnataka High Court currently deliberates on the tax benefits for same sex couples, the simple act of painting longing of recognised coupledom as art is political. It is rebellion dressed in the brightest colours.

Rooted in the region’s rich cultural traditions, craft practices and communities, The Mayurbhanj Residency (@artandcharlie x @themayurbhanjfoundation initiative) brings contemporary artists and local artist clusters together in a space for exchange, learning and collaboration. The residency also aims to open up conversations around new ways of working to emerge as equal collaboration between contemporary and local artists.

As the first edition of the residency comes to a close, we are grateful to see these conversations travel beyond Mayurbhanj and receive recognition across platforms. At its heart, the residency remains deeply connected to the people, practices and cultural landscape that make Mayurbhanj what it is.

आप किसकी तरफ से? 👀

Bride’s side or groom’s side?

What if the most honest answer was: the corner of the room watching everyone else dance.

Introducing ‘Wedding Season’ आप किसकी तरफ से? Aksh Diwan Garg’s (@akshdge) debut solo exhibition. A series of oil paintings draped in sequins, chiffon, and side-eyes, starring the real protagonists of every Indian wedding: the mausis, the mehendi, the baraat, the commentary with serving of two Gulab Jamuns only.

Glamorous on the surface. Asking bigger questions underneath about who gets invited to love and celebrate the love.
