Mitchell-Innes & Nash remains committed to navigating the ever-evolving art market. Our Chelsea office and viewing room are open for appointments with collectors, curators, and institutions, and we continue to serve as trusted advisors and consultants to artists, estates, and collectors. As always, David and Lucy remain actively engaged in the secondary market for 20th and 21st century art.

In October 2024, we participated in The Salon by NADA in Paris alongside 52 Walker, presenting a joint exhibition of works by Pope.L. This May, we will showcase a solo exhibition of Pope.L’s work at the Independent Art Fair in New York City.

With a small, dynamic team, we are dedicated to providing personalized service. If you are interested in working with us, please reach out via email or phone. We look forward to keeping our supporters informed as our business continues to evolve.

“The poodles strut this way and that, here putting their best foot forward as faithful companion and man’s best friend; there presenting a noble profile as the artists’ consorts or the artists’ muse. Now they are Pavillion guard dogs, architectural ornament, heraldic devices. Now they bound into a geometry of sex, a tautology of give and take; now reveal themselves in a cloud of decadence, banal and effete.”

“The great thing about it only saying ‘AIDS’ and nothing else was that we could show it anywhere and people knew what it was. It communicated,” says @aa_bronson, one of the founders and the only surviving member of the seminal Canadian artist trio @generalidea_

In our latest Independent Feature, Bronson speaks about the group’s history, its ideas, and “viral images,” with @michaelbuhlerrose, an artist himself and one of the breakout stars of Independent this past May. Bronson and Bühler-Rose collaborated and exhibited together in the past, and their discussion delves into General Idea’s origins and inspirations, philosophy, and tragic denouement.

This September, Mitchell-Innes & Nash (@miandn) brings a selection of General Idea’s paintings and other works to Independent 20th Century. Tap the link in bio to read the full interview.

Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to present a survey of work by the collective General Idea (active 1969–1994) at Independent 20th Century, September 24-27 this fall at the Breuer in New York.

The group championed their identity as a triumvirate, a trouple, a “ménage à trois,” as a normative family unit, whether through ziggurats and their ancient magical symbolism, cuddling triplet babies, or the three primary colors: red, blue, and green. They equally celebrated their queer identity and the stereotypes associated with poodles—the perfectly groomed and trained companions who always “aimed to please.”

I like to sell things at astronomical prices while fishing for humanity with the worm of the social unconscious. I am a fisherman of social absurdity, if you will. I am more provocateur than activist. My focus is to politicize disenfranchisement, to make it neut, to reinvent what’s beneath us, to remind us where we all come from. – Pope.L

My aim is to be out. An out-bitch. Outside. The inside of the inside. And engage the challenge; the melodrama of life with its soap opera, stupidities, concavities, quagmires multi-tiered, and porous. Life is a mess. Drink it up. Mess deserves mess. We deserve life. It’s the best of our inventions. Convoluted and mutating. Always changing and insulting us with incalculable difference. No dichotomy can shake it. I say: I am an African-American male artist because I know it’s as much true as not true. Ask the white man that once owned my great-great grandfather. – Pope.L in “The Hole Inside The Space Inside Yves Klein’s Asshole,” February 11, 2000 at Concordia University, Montreal

Visit us at the Independent May 8 - 11 at Spring Studios Booth 620 in New York!

We are pleased to present a solo presentation of work by acclaimed American performance artist Pope.L (1955-2023), offering a survey of his provocative, humorous practice. With a focus on performance, installation, sound, writing, drawing, and painting, Pope.L’s diverse practice continuously challenges his audience to question deep-seated beliefs surrounding class, race, language, and identity. Known for his ability to expose the contradictions embedded in contemporary culture, he uses humor as both a weapon and a lens to confront uncomfortable truths about our social structures. His works highlight the paradoxes of identity and power, often exploring the liminal space where differences—be they racial, linguistic, or gendered—collide, creating tensions that upend conventional thought.  He enticed the viewer into dialogue by harnessing the absurd and familiar public figures, often reassigning roles to challenge and dismantle preconceived notions of history. The presentation will include never before seen or exhibited pieces from the 1990s and early 2000s alongside more recent work.
