Fair Appreciation Post!! @independent_hq 🤩👏🏾🎉
As a notorious fair detractor, this was a delightful surprise: great art in a great setting, so much to see and discover and transact on 🫦. Exactly what a fair should do. 🫶🏽

Congrats @e.dee.art @sothebys on the great collaboration

“The great thing about it only saying ‘AIDS’ and nothing else was that we could show it anywhere and people knew what it was. It communicated,” says @aa_bronson, one of the founders and the only surviving member of the seminal Canadian artist trio @generalidea_

In our latest Independent Feature, Bronson speaks about the group’s history, its ideas, and “viral images,” with @michaelbuhlerrose, an artist himself and one of the breakout stars of Independent this past May. Bronson and Bühler-Rose collaborated and exhibited together in the past, and their discussion delves into General Idea’s origins and inspirations, philosophy, and tragic denouement.

This September, Mitchell-Innes & Nash (@miandn) brings a selection of General Idea’s paintings and other works to Independent 20th Century. Tap the link in bio to read the full interview.

Pop Art, its immediate antecedents, and its fellow travelers, seem to us today to possess a distinct and recognizable style. Was this true, however, to observers at the time of its creation?

Celebrated critic, New York Times contributor, and Warhol biographer @blake_gopnik considers the topic of style and Pop in Independent’s latest Feature, Pointing at the World: Modern “Style” and Pop, which takes six Pop-related presentations to be shown at Independent 20th Century in September as its point of departure: @warholfoundation @voenagallery @andrewkrepsgallery @garthgreenangallery @mariangoodmangallery @miandn

Welcoming exciting new @artinstitutechi acquisitions including Pope.L’s One Substance, Eight Supports, One Situation (2008) (exhibited in Hamza Walker’s exhibition Black Is, Black Ain’t @rensoc ), eight color-painted shelves, each topped with a cone of flour, through the interstitial spaces of the galleries; Julia Scher’s @securitybyjuliascher Hidden Camera (Hallway Cam) (1991/2018) (seen here when installed in her exhibition @museumabteiberg ), a potted plant concealing a camcorder, a live feed on a nearby monitor; and Matthias Groebel’s @matthiasgroebel untitled (1990), made with the artist’s painting machine from a televised image of Norman Schwarzkopf during the first Gulf War—the first war covered live on CNN, frozen by chance into paint. #popel #juliascher #mathiasgroebel

In 2016, artist Amanda Ross-Ho purchased a collection of vintage paper clock face dials on eBay. These clock faces served as diaristic surfaces for her artmaking, replacing a studio practice from which she was displaced at that moment. Over time, the dials became sites of accumulation for note-taking, scribbling, pigment testing, and even collecting food and drink stains: reconfiguring how a recognizable temporal surface can serve as a document for the passing of time—from ordered to disordered, mechanical to messy. Later, Ross-Ho used these clock faces as source images for twelve large-scale paintings replicated in detail within a month, further collapsing chronology into her own idiosyncratic visual practice and in turn transforming the impersonality of time’s passing into works that are embodied and unique.
