“To move forward with desire, to be aware of the multidimensionality of a step. To be conscious of that component of a walk, of its action as consisting of a before, during, and after—but not necessarily in that order. What might it mean for something like lesbian adoration, something always relegated to the sidelines of society’s gaze — “the alleyways, the archives, the diaries, the glances across the street, and, as it is sometimes documented, the bathroom”— for its enactment to be embraced in its totality, rather than be consumed from the outset over fear of its potential disappearance? With the voice of Violette Leduc at the helm alongside those of Virginie Despentes, Deborah Levy, Simone de Beauvoir & Erin Honeycutt themself, Forward renders the step as a kaleidoscope, an emblem of lesbian desire, and a place where past, present, and future intertwine.” - intro by the author by @mic_brinsley

wrote abt Toshiko Okanoue for @awomensthing - the sole Japanese surrealist in existence (she’s still alive, at 98, & has read this essay in fact!) who made photomontages primarily in the 1950s using the discarded magazines left behind by the soldiers of the US occupation of Japan following WWII

I’ve never done this before, write a whole essay abt another person from Japan, I’m sure I’ve been avoiding it for some time. for me, the thought of writing abt the place where I was born & raised always fills me w/a certain desire for revenge that also comes w/heaps of guilt, as I feel a particular wish to correct the record both for those who’ve never been to or understand Japan, but also selfishly I wish to reveal the scars of its own country that so often Japan ignores - even intentionally hides - from its own citizens & the rest of the world

w/the blessing of Okanoue herself, I feel grateful to be able to articulate just how horrific it must have been to experience the firebombing of Tokyo that she witnessed at 17, while also holding space for the atrocities that the Japanese army inflicted on so much of the Asian continent in the years before, that she herself was ignorant of when she watched her city burn down. I hope this essay can both be a way to look anew at how the technical rigor & artistic precision that defines so many Japanese art forms can inform the way we conceive of surrealist practices, as well as provoke a nuanced discussion of the ways in which Japan has justifiably taken the position of a victim following WWII yet also uses that as a smokescreen to continue to fail its own citizens as well as those from the countries it plundered & destroyed. I also hope this introduces you all to an artist who, in my opinion, is undercelebrated & absolutely brilliant ✨

hope you enjoy: https://awomensthing.org/blog/toshiko-okanoue/

pride month might have ended yesterday, but for those looking to sink your teeth into more queerness bc every day is gay, for your reading pleasure here is QUEER NIGHTLIFE, the latest issue of TDR: The Drama Review 💋

I’ve been working for TDR since January, but this is the first issue I worked on from cover to cover through the entire editing // copy editing process. it’s a special issue edited by some legends of the field & must confess, the whole thing is a v delicious read. much of it is constructed as a sequence of encounters on a dance floor, ft. contributions from some of the greatest artists/theorists/thinkers of hedonism, queerness, intimacy, & the night working today, in no particular order:

madison moore
McKenzie Wark
Tavia N’yongo
eva pensis
Avgi Saketopoulou
Lucie Fielding
Rebecca Schneider
Ariel Osterweis
Beckett Warzer
Juana María Rodríguez
& many more!

I’m the luckiest for having this chance to edit their stunning words, & I super encourage anyone interested to read through it all - it’s a glorious ride x
