POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We’re beyond honored today to welcome @makenna_good to @piccioletta.barca for an interview on her spectacular book HELEN OF NOWHERE, which was recently longlisted for the @thebookerprizes - amongst a slew of other accolades. Makenna spoke with co-editor-in-chief @mic_brinsley about the life-changing shift that instigated the writing of her novel, her desire to reach for ‘something beyond expertise,’ and the influence of garden design, magic, quilting, conversation, pastoral life, Agnès Varda, and much much more, on her life and work.

the interview is now live on our website: https://www.picciolettabarca.com/posts/something-beyond-expertise-a-conversation-with-makenna-goodman

Makenna Goodman is the author of two critically acclaimed novels. HELEN OF NOWHERE was longlisted for the Booker Prize 2026, and was a finalist for the Vermont Book Award, a Best Book of the Year by Granta, The Paris Review, and The Times, and has been called “a perfect fairy tale for our times” (The Guardian). Her first novel, THE SHAME, was named a best book of the year by the White Review and Harvard Review. She has written for international publications including the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Review of Books, BOMB, Harvard Review, White Review, MOUSSE, RA Magazine, and more, and her work is currently being translated into seven languages.

“My Window: Art Edition A-D” by David Hockney, bidding for purchase currently ongoing from @phillipsauction - images from the first & last slide photographed by @vasilikipoula

Description from Phillips website:

From Johannes Vermeer to Marc Chagall, the window is a well-versed subject within the annals of art history – and yet Hockney is able to approach this well-frequented motif with a novel sensibility, digitally painting the world from his window. As the My Window: Art Edition A-D series unfurls, we are first presented with a red carnation in an ornate vase that reflects the light cast through emerald green shutters. The viewer is then offered a look outside the window; a quaint house is depicted behind luscious pink blossoms that branch towards a British summer sky. A fuchsia bouquet is delicately rendered against the backdrop of the windowpane, while a deep frost wrenches the viewer into the chilly winter months. Within each of the prints, Hockney transports us through the seasons and bridges the space between the intimate domestic sphere and the shared experiences of nature – all from within his modern canvas of an iPad.

We are very very very pleased to have our dear @mic_brinsley in the contributor section:

‘Another visitation with Charlotte Salomon, distinct from the dispatch shared in the early days of Amurmur...

« Doubt as a Pathway » is a collage, a reflection, a summoning, a writhing on the floor after dark, an evocation, a reaching, a confusion, a wail... an attempt to reckon with the shards of memory that linger, of a time when I was wholeheartedly immersed in an archive. It’s been a couple of years since I spent many months in the Salomon archives in Amsterdam, in a city I wasn’t familiar with, where I knew no one, where I spent all of my time learning as much as I could about this underappreciated artist, this ferocious painter who the world often renders as a victim of her circumstances, rather than a survivor of it. While I’ve since been pursuing other projects, the time in the Salomon archives in Amsterdam haunts me like a memory from my childhood. What do I do with it? Should it be shared? How? I’ve really struggled to know how to articulate the experience, as it feels multi-layered, impossible to explain within a cohesive whole. I do wish to find a way to contain it in writing somehow, I do. But it so often feels impossible.

This is a small window into how it feels to be wrestling with this memory, this time in the archive with a phantom as a companion, of another but also a ghost of myself - as it occurred in a very different stage in my life.

I’m slowly trying to walk through all of its rooms.’

We just hit 2,000 ❤️⛵️

We wanted to thank everyone who’s been backing us, reading us, sharing us, believing in this little thing we started. @piccioletta.barca is 8… maybe 7… turning 9? We’ve honestly lost track. But somehow, it’s still growing, and so are we. We’re just really grateful to keep sharing work we love, from both new voices and those we’ve admired for a long time.

Thank you for being here, truly.

In “Doors into the Present: Dorothea Tanning and the Art of Becoming,” @mic_brinsley writes through Dorothea Tanning’s “Birthday” as a moment of becoming rather than a fixed image. A self-portrait made while things were still unsettled, with doors opening behind her and no clear resolution in sight.

The essay moves between Tanning, Virginia Woolf’s idea of a room of one’s own, and the experience of trying to think and make work inside spaces that don’t always support it. It considers solitude, autonomy, and what happens when a room stops being enough.

Now live on A Women’s Thing.
