juxtaposition [encore]
2020
creative direction by more ideas
filmed by michael wood
catching by brayden mott, andrew langdown & alan wood
produced, directed, edited by michael wood

Following on from last week’s post of Juxtaposition, the encore version doubled down on aesthetic, pushed harder down a creative direction, and made bream fishing look fresher than ever. Take early 2000’s NBA dunk contest commentary (if anyone can name the player who left kenny and chuck speechless we can be friends), hip hop music and music videos, epic food from our favourite ramen spot, lit fishing gear and cool clothes, fire cars, covid era scenes, and a love for the Gold Coast and the fish that inhabit it, and mix that all together you get this frantic collage of energy.

The philosophy is simple: every reference should contribute and mean something, each frame should be intentional, inspiration should come from somewhere other than fishing, and push the line forward every single chance we get. These aren’t vlogs to watch once and then wait for the next upload. These are art pieces that give you something new every time you watch it, you should pick up the messaging, the intent and references throughout the edit, the whole piece should inspire conversation and get the viewers creative juices flowing. Get with your crew and make something epic to you. Post that shit if you. If the world likes it then cool, but always just do it for you. Get off that algorithm and get back to doing stuff for the love again. taken in Gold Coast, Queensland by @michael_____wood

juxtaposition [2020]
featuring brayden mott, andrew langdown & alan wood
concept by michael wood
filmed, directed, produced and edited by michael wood

Juxtaposition (released August 2020) evolved out of a bigger scale film project I’d started back in 2017. That film, at the time called ‘Same Difference’ would change to ‘The Fine Line’ as it underwent drastic creative direction changes and my self-taught editing skills improved. What began as a fishing film inspired by my favourite surf films from the 2000’s-2010’s evolved into concept bending, boundary pushing, artistically supercharged provocative thought piece.

I became allergic to mediocrity and obsessed with uniqueness. Never ‘content’, always art. The Fine Line was turning into an illustration of how fishing can be infused with everything else going on in the world rapidly changing around us, present fishing in a wildly different light and also a piece to communicate thoughts and perspectives.

Then, the pandemic slammed everyone’s doors shut to the outside world. We’d been pushing what was actually possible on the fishing front, how we could film it to preserve spots, techniques and uphold unwritten laws of fishing we lived by. So much either was never filmed or only lives in archives because we never wished to ruin a good thing just to get a video out.

During the lockdowns, we would all be on the phone daily, checking in on each other, bouncing ideas around and talking about how f*cked everything was. Juxtaposition’s concept and storyboarding began in those conversations. As the weather cooled and restrictions eased, we reached for our light tackle gear for local stuff. We were back outside and bringing the concept and conversations to life. Make finesse fishing look as cool as possible, something the industry, social media community and general consensus would tell you had nothing to do with each other. Bream fishing has never been perceived as cool, but what if you repositioned it in a completely new light, aligned it with other things to compare or contrast or create an interesting effect. That’s a juxtaposition. taken in Gold Coast, Queensland by @michael_____wood
