The Gold Coast Grand Slam 🙌 Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Giant Herring and Giant Trevally — the big four of Gold Coast sportfish (in my eyes anyway). But here’s the catch: all caught in one session, all quality fish, all on lures, all landbased, right in the heart of the Goldy. Simple concept, but actualising it is another thing. On a random afternoon in 2023, conditions aligned, we made the right calls, and an unforgettable few hours unfolded. We’d come close plenty of times before and after — often ticking off three of the four target species, or a hot start where you start saying “the Grand Slam could be on this arvo”. It wasn’t a perfect session. Everything happened so fast, and there were missed chances mixed in the chaos. But far out was it lit. The GT kicked things off, crunching a glidebait — we initially thought it was something else flashy and silver Then things shifted up a gear. We put ourselves in a brief but insane XL Barra bite window. Pure carnage. Fish blowing up wire stinger rigs, throwing and straightening hooks like it was nothing. Amidst all the madness, @braydenmott pinned and landed his first Goldy Mundi — a proper tank landed while others came unstuck around it. Jack doinks on 7” plastics are different, and a couple savage Jack strikes were mixed in too — the kind that either don’t stick at all or nearly rip the rod out of your hands when they do like only Jacks can. And the GH? Exactly what you’d expect — big jumps, thrown hooks, a couple sending lures flying back through the air mid-fight and converting an absolute cracker to complete the Grand Slam! It felt like everything was happening at once — racing from zone to zone, gear tested on every bite, and enough going right to keep it all together. Sessions like that don’t come around often. Driving home, it felt like we’d just experienced some of the best fishing the Gold Coast has to offer — it’s wild how could’ve been even better. The Golden Coast really has it all going on. What a crazy few hours that was. Still stoked years later. Hope you can tick off your ‘Grand Slam’ too, wherever you are and whichever target species make up yours!

For the last few years I’ve barely used my modern cameras. Almost everything in my life has been captured on 20+ year old family hand-me-down digital camcorders and point-and-shoots. I’ll go months without even taking a candid photo on my phone. When your life revolves around the arts, you’re fully present inside your own world and super focused on the fishing, the newest mirrorless and phone cameras and the convenience of instantly shooting and posting content feels redundant. These old cameras have seen some things after sitting in cupboards for years. It’s amazing how well they (sometimes) still work. They’re robust but temperamental — they can only handle so much before needing a rest — but they’re easily the most fun photography tools I’ve used. They’ve influenced a lot of the creative direction behind the fishing work I’ve been doing since late 2022, and will so in the near future too. From Rainbow Trout in the NSW hinterland to Tarpon in the Gulf of America. Barramundi up a quiet Central Queensland creek to Snapper in an Osaka restaurant where you literally catch your dinner from your table. Life captured low-res. Candid. Raw. Spontaneous. No filters imitating the aesthetic. No edits or touch-ups. Just take the photo and keep it moving. Your camera should blend into the moment — not shape the moment into a piece of content. Here’s a sampling of what some old Sony and Canon point-and-shoots have captured on the fishing front over the last few years, captured by the crew and I. If you like the look and feel of these photos I appreciate you. If you don’t, that’s fine too — most here were never really taken with the intention of anyone seeing them. I was just busy capturing life and exploring a new creative direction, not worrying about posting it on Instagram. The fishing and places were pretty cool though. At least I think so. Far out I love fishing. More ideas to come. ✌️

This time last year. Early Autumn 2025 was basically just throw a bunch of fishing gear in the car and send on strike missions where more time was usually spent driving up and back than actually fishing. And far out did we have ourselves a time. Fishing trips are sick when you’re on a time crunch. Lock in, figure fish out quick, talk some shit and make fire happen! Legendary times with legendary people. Vibes were immaculate, always. Sleep deprivation was real, some things don’t change. The fishing up there, undeniably epic. Barramundi, coolest fish ever. Fizzerbait GT’s on swimbait gear, sure that got figured out (somehow). Shot almost entirely on 20+ year old digital cameras.
