INFINITY NOOK
Steel & Pine
17.5” x 17.5” x 37”
Spring 2025

After a long semester, the Infinity Nook is finished, polished, and standing up straight. I’ll cut straight to the chase, this was a challenge, and didn’t seem possible at the time I first drew out the drafts.

Inspired by aesthetics pioneered by the Bauhaus masters of 20th century Germany. An homage to the birth of modernist design as we know it, a genre that has shaped the world whether we like it or not. Design is everything, and everything is design.

Walter Gropius’ notion of blurring the line between art and design has guided me in great ways, along with several other philosophies born out of the Bauhaus school. The Bauhaus school was ahead of its time, and never got the flowers it fully deserved, as its influenced quite literally everything in the industry for the better.

Material, form, and balance were my top priorities when designing this piece. I wanted an industrial look, while still retaining as much elegance as possible. The cantilevered quality was a challenge, but was combated when the shelves were installed. Made from 16 gauge steel and pine wood, the Infinity Nook stands at 37 inches high and 17.5 inches wide in either direction. Meant to be a side table for a couch, and/or corner of a room, the Infinity Nook can hold books, magazines, cups, etc.

On paper, the design makes sense, but when put into reality, a lots of problems reveal themselves. What material? How heavy should this be? Is this wood strong enough? How will this even stand? Is this structure even possible to build? Will it fall over? These were all valid questions, that answered themselves eventually as time went on.

Loads and loads of math was done to figure out the dimensions and ratio of the structure, and then was scaled upwards to be plasma cut into steel pieces. 90 degree angle irons were used to bind the metal together, via welding, but only towards the bottom where it needed to be heavier. The shelves were measured out, cut, glued together, cut again, stained, and then fastened to the piece once assembled. by @michaelc0nte
