Another day, another multi-talented student who took both the Digital and Studio Capstone. Michael Conte (@michaelc0nte) created two different but related works for his Capstone projects.

For Digital Capstone, he did an exceptional amount of research into Bauhaus design, theory, artists, and impacts. He designed, wrote, and edited a 118 page book on the subject, simply titled Bauhaus. He created a layout that reflects the design principles of the movement and features Bauhaus fonts, a plethora of images, and both information on the era, and its effect on him and contemporary art and design. Three copies of the book were on view in the Gallery for visitors to peruse.

For his Studio Capstone project, Michael designed and built two fully usable pieces of furniture from wood and steel: Infinity Nook and Dual Radius Organizer. Reflecting his functional and aesthetic eye for design, you can see the influence of the Bauhaus ethos. Each piece was set up and staged as if in active use.

All but photo 6 were provided by the artist. Photo 6 was taken by @raymondaphoto.

Join us for the reception celebrating Shapeshifters: Bodies Like Water today from 2-6pm in the Freedom Room at CRRJIE in Lee Hall! Please also join us in artmaking during the reception 🎨.

Shapeshifters: Bodies Like Water is an exhibition of photographs featured in a book of the same name. This collection honors the deep connections between the body, land, and queer wisdom. The strength of these connections manifests as the courage to separate from predetermined ideals of gender, to surrender and embark on a sacred journey of self-realization. Shapeshifters is a celebration of this journey. Why do we focus on gender as the playground for liberation? To play with gender is to play with power, to actively shift the violent dynamics of colonization, white supremacy, and other systems of oppression that rely on seemingly unchangeable gender norms.

Executive Produced by SUNY Oneonta alumni, Ira Baumgarten (SUNY Oneonta '73), with Associate Producers Nadine Baumgarten (SUNY Oneonta '74) and Tom Toni Parker, it features artists Jenny Zander (photographer and body artist), Gayatri Narayanan, Tom Toni Parker, Ro Lorenzen, Sharon Day, Natalia Patiño, BakiBakiBaki Porter, and Rox Anderson. Lead Writer and Grounding Practitioner for the book is Gayatri Narayanan, Artistic Director is Jenny Zander, and History and Resource Writer is BakiBakiBaki Porter.

Please join us for the uncanny body, a final performance showcasing the culminating work of our Spring 2025 LAB Interdisciplinary Artists-in-Residence: Georgia b Smith (@georgiab.smith) and Zelda Smith (@zeldasmithstudio)!

April 15 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Hamblin Theatre, Fine Arts Center
General Admission seating

The artists have been working with SUNY Oneonta students, faculty, and staff in the Art, Music, and Theatre Departments since March 4. Over the past six weeks, they have built interactive sculptural works designed to be activated in this final performance whose choreography, lighting, and sound have also been developed here on campus.

The uncanny body is a visceral and magnetic exploration of the human body, new media, and performative sculpture, and each 20-minute performance will be followed by a Q&A with the artists.

Featuring lightworks by Yael Erel and music by Rockwell Norris, with Lighting Technician Rachel Wolf and Sound Technician Elliot Barrett. Participating dancers are Madison Butera, Cade Flores, Isabella Galan, Madison Knapp, Jess Mulholland, and Mars Murray. With assistance from student interns Eve Mead, Jess Mulholland, and Lexi Rockefeller.

Poster design by Michael Conte (@michaelc0nte).

Performance presented as the culminating event for the LAB Artist-in-Residence program. Residency made possible by funding from the Regaining Momentum: Strategic Opportunities grant program.

🚨CALLING ALL ART STUDENTS🚨

Applications for student exhibitions in the Fall 2025 semester are now open through Project Open Call! You can learn more and apply now through April 11, 2025 at midnight by following the link in our bio or scanning this QR code and clicking on "apply now."

There are two track options available: the "Curated Group Show" track and the "Artist as Curator" track. In the Curated Group Show Track, you are encouraged to submit up to three works that you feel are a strong example of your practice - either personal work or course work of all mediums is accepted, series of works are accepted as one work. If you have an exhibition idea, either for a solo show of personal work or a group project, you may submit that under the Artist as Curator Track.

You must apply via SlideRoom: the application is free and you can create a free account. If you would like to apply to both tracks, reach out to the Gallery Director for more information. Exhibition dates and selected work will be announced in May 2025.

Interested in applying for a solo show but concerned about the cost? Check out the Student Grant Program for Research and Creative Activity (SRCA), for pathways to help fund your work and its display. We recommend reviewing the "Traditional" Track and reaching out to the Gallery Director with questions.

TWIN VISIONS | SEAN EAVES
Open Space Gallery On view: October 1 - 26, 2024
Reception: Thursday, October 24, 2024, 5-7 p.m.

Twin Visions is a solo show of double exposure photographs by Sean Eaves (SUNY Oneonta '25) selected from the Gallery's semesterly Project Open Call. By digitally manipulating and overlaying two different photographs, Eaves has created a series of hauntingly familiar black and white images where the viewer often feels off-balance or unsure and is consistently left with the need to look deeper, both to pull apart the two images in their mind and to untangle the perceived meaning of their combined composition. The main objective of this work is to show that even though daily life may seem boring at times, there is always something beautiful to be seen if you're looking. Through this exhibition, Eaves hopes to show a new perspective on how people view the world around them, bringing two aspects of life together to create something whole and beautiful-two moments in time forever intertwined.
