Another great opportunity to work with my friends Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw on their documentary BURGUNDY for the Venice Film Festival this year. It’s third one I’ve painted for them. We tried to keep all three posters in the same vein with a traditionally painted composition in vintage styles of the 50’s and 60’s. It’s always a challenge with a big reward. I get to do the title and the copy for the poster as well. They had great success with this doc and they’re on the way to Telluride for the next festival.

ā€˜Mermaid 18b, Weeki Wachee
River, Florida, 2007 Gelatin silver print, 60 x 60
inches (152 x 152 cm) Edition of 5

I am obsessed with finding worlds that exist beyond the realm of globalization and technology, and that have maintained their identities against long odds.
Several years ago, I discovered a community of mermaids on a remote island in Aripeka, Florida, and was immediately struck by the place. It was spectacular-like an underwater fairytale land. The mermaids were sensual and alluring, but also free and completely unfettered. I made these photographs with them at night, 30 feet beneath the surface of the Weeki Wachee River. The water is clear and pure there. I was trying to capture their private and peaceful place, where they have found a kind of serenity that does not exist on dry land. by @michaeldweckstudio

Today we lost Robert Redford, an icon, a storyteller, an activist, and a man whose vision changed the landscape of cinema forever.

One of my fondest memories is meeting Bob at a breakfast he hosted in the snowy Sundance Lodge in January 2018, the morning after I arrived to premiere my first film, The Last Race. He spoke about the importance of risk, inspiring empathy, the power of art, our connection to the natural world, and above all, building community.

Those words have stayed with me. His belief in art’s ability to change the way we see each other and the world is a gift that will endure.

My thoughts are with his wife Sibylle, and his daughters Amy and Shauna. Sending them love during this time of loss.

Thank you, Bob, for creating a home for so many of us, for your courage, your vision, and your humanity. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will live on in every story told. by @michaeldweckstudio

Cinematographers and co-directors Michael Dweck (@michaeldweckstudio) and Gregory Kershaw (@gregorykershaw) on using ARRI’s 24-75mm Signature Zoom for their ASC Award–winning documentary "Gaucho Gaucho:"

ā€œThe lens has the amazing capacity to capture the world in vivid detail, while holding a soft, round quality that lends itself to the poetry of our images. We want our subjects’ faces to feel like the star of the film, and for the viewer to really feel their emotions and textures, while still letting the world around them exist, just slightly out of focus. It helps the viewer feel like they’re inside the characters’ heads."

"Gaucho Gaucho" marks the duo’s second ASC Award, following their 2021 win for The Truffle Hunters.

Opening June 12 - August 30, 2025
Maruani Mercier
Avenue Louise 430
Brussels 1050

Mermaid 54, Aripeka, Florida 2008

Maruani Mercier is presenting Echoes of Her, a group show at its Brussels gallery. With this exhibition, the gallery aims to explore the multifaceted nature of womanhood by examining its complexity through a diverse selection of works by; Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Michael Dweck, Eric Fischl, Alex Katz, David LaChapelle, McDermott & McGough, Andy Warhol and Sue Williams. In Echoes of Her, seventeen artists, each shaped by distinct cultural, geographical, and personal perspectives, reflect on the layered intricacies of womanhood across different lived realities and social landscapes.

Including painting, photography, sculpture, and mirrored works that at times quite literally implicate the viewer, the exhibition brings forth meditations on identity, visibility, and the shifting roles women inhabit. How are women perceived in society? And more importantly, how do they see themselves, beyond inherited expectations, projected archetypes, or prescribed narratives?

Echoes of Her takes an engaged stance, stepping away from depictions of womanhood in a limited and singular way, shaped largely by narrow, dominant perspectives. It questions long-held assumptions about the female condition, invites us to look again, and differently, at the images we’ve inherited, and considers how portrayals by both female and male artists can contribute to a more complex, layered understanding of what it means to be a woman. A nuanced dialogue emerges not only between the artists and their subjects, subtly engaging with the legacy of the (male) gaze and the power dynamics embedded in representation, while embracing the richness of self- determined representation.

Echoes of Her invites us to consider how images resonate beyond the frame, how they shape, challenge, and echo the lived experiences of those they seek to portray. Ultimately, it is a celebration of the multiplicity of womanhood: fractured and whole, visible and obscured, defined only on one’s own terms. by @michaeldweckstudio
