BORDERLAND / GRENSLAND - 2026
Analogue dia slide-show & public WOO-request

Installation at the group exhibition De Staat Van, organized by het Kunstenlab at the Bergkerk Deventer.
Together with a group of 14 artists we curated the exhibition ‘Border Colonialism’, of which my installation BORDERLAND / GRENSLAND is part of.

The title for the exhibition is inspired by the book of writer and scholar Albina Fetahaj, who wrote a book with the same title.
Together with Albina, artist Rami Alshilli and myself, we will have a public conversation about the different works in the group exhibition and how they relate to the themes in Albina’s book.
The talk will be hosted by journalist and writer Jorie Horsthuis from De Facto, an on- and offline platform on contested border areas that combines journalism, art and science.

In today’s Trouw! @trouw.deverdieping
An article about an important piece of urban nature that is dear not only to me, but also to a whole group of people who have become very dear to me.

For over a year I have been following the development of a largely forgotten area of nature in Deventer, the city where I live, alongside academic researcher and writer Roel Griffioen, who invited me to participate in his research.
He identified an intriguing clash of interests. How urban government planning is contrasted by social participation. And how the need for a green biodiverse urban environment is competing with the need for space for housing in times of a growing housing crisis.

We became volunteers and helped with the urban garden in an area that had been almost forgotten, which is now a green oasis of social participation right in the city centre.

Together we observe the changes, we talk with various experts and scientists, and speak with the different urban gardeners, birdwatchers and collect sound.
As a photographer I am following the change of seasons. I installed four poles, from which I make images with an analogue disposable camera, as to lose control and let coincidence play its part, and observe the development of the garden through human activity.

’Standplaats Rozengaarderweg’, as we call it, could well be an example of the importance and value of urban green spaces, not only in Deventer, but throughout the country.

This is the first of more things to come.
Made possible with the support of Jeannette Hollaar Fonds.

Thanks you to everyone involved, to the editors of Trouw, and of course Roel for inviting me.

Tomorrow is the opening of the solo exhibition
IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING @kunstenlab

This work is a meditation on the tension between human and geological time.
About how our relation to time influences the connection to the land we inhabit. An exploration of the question whether we are dominating nature or if we are being influenced by it?

Art historian and curator Claire Hoogakker will give the opening speech. @clairehoogakker

Sunday April 12th - 15.00h
We hope to see you there!

The exhibition will be on view till June 14th.

‘It Might As Well Be Spring’ opent op zondag 12 april samen met de tentoonstellingen SHEDDED van Jeroen van Westen en ‘Consolations for a Broken Daughter' van Ellen Yiu. We starten om 15.00 uur. Je bent welkom vanaf 14.30 uur.

 ------

In his ongoing project ‘It Might As Well Be Spring’, Michael Rhebergen traces the changes in the landscape around the Baakse Beek, a project that began two years ago. In this work, Rhebergen explores how our perception of time shapes the way we relate to the landscape. In his photographs, both in black-and-white and color, he captures landscapes that at first appear familiar, but reveal greater complexity upon closer inspection. By bringing together landscapes, human presence, and different layers of time, he invites us to reflect on how we relate to the landscape and, at the same time, how the landscape shapes us.

‘It Might As Well Be Spring’ opens on Sunday, April 12, alongside the exhibitions SHEDDED by Jeroen van Westen and Consolations for a Broken Daughter by Ellen Yiu. The opening starts at 3:00 PM, and you are welcome from 2:30 PM.

‘It Might As Well Be Spring’ is mede mogelijk gemaakt door Museum Villa Mondriaan, Gemeente Winterswijk, Provincie Gelderland, Zabawas en het Mondriaan Fonds.

It Might As Well Be Spring’.

‘It Might As Well Be Spring’ is een vervolg op zijn project THE NEW COAST, waarin Rhebergen speculeert over een mogelijke verschuiving van onze kustlijn als gevolg van klimaatverandering.

About a year ago writer and investigative journalist Hans Wetzels and I landed in Dakar, Senegal, where we embarked on a month long research trip, which started in Tenerife.

We made stories for Follow the Money, Vrij Nederland, MO* Magazine, DeSmog and Down to Earth Magazine.
Not so long ago our latest work got published for Follow the Money.
Part of my work has been exhibited at Copenhagen Photo Festival in Denmark, Instituto Europeo Studi in Italy and Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Morocco.

You can now also have a look at my website for an edit of this work.

I want to thank the Pulitzer Center for their trust and generous support, all the editors we worked with, for their care and effort and of course Natalia Vargas and Borso Tall for their valuable support on the ground.
And last but not least a big shout out to my partner in crime Hans Wetzels, for the never ending….
More adventures are on their way

Sometimes you have to wait a little and have patience for stories to see the light of day, this is one of those. An important one for Vrij Nederland.
In print for one of their summer issues. @vrij_nederland

A story on how sustainably farmed salmon in Europe is being fed with fish from the West African coast. Curious to know more about the impact and effects?
Get your hands on a copy!

In the month December I was in the West African country of Senegal together with writer and research journalist Hans Wetzels to find out more about the influence of so-called sustainable salmon from Europe on African soil.
Despite the challenging subject we had a lot of fun working on this story together with the local journalist Borso Tall, visiting many big and small fishing communities on the coast. Talking to countless traditional fishermen and women.
I remember my long morning walks in search of the right light, the right setting and that possible chance encounter. It involved a lot of waiting and saying thanks in the local language Wolof, ‘djeredjef’.

A heartfelt thanks to all those who helped and shared their stories with us.
Many thanks to the editors for the great lay-out and edit.

And a big thanks to the Pulitzer Center for their generous support.
