All of the non-lab adventures :) Year 1…

of the program really was a blast!!!! Even though some nights meant grinding until 2 a.m, I still got to make some pretty amazing memories along the way. From training for this marathon, to the Balloon Museum, meeting a man I love, Halloween craziness, Disney ofc, seeing Ariana Grande, and enjoying just a few whiskey diets 😁

There truly isn’t much more I could have asked for from my first year as a PhD student. Here’s to seeing what Year 2 has in store :) by @michaelrobinson_13

To the freshman who once wanted to transfer: congratulations — the dog days are over. All you needed was a little Faith, Trust… and ChatGPT :)

To the University of Miami: Thank you for four incredible years filled with true friends, scooter rides, hardships, broken legs, loud laughs, blackbirds, thumbs ups, side quests, and everything in between. Every person I interacted shaped me as a person. I’m truly going to miss undergrad and all the memories it gave me.

NEXT STEP: Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Florida Atlantic University, Class of 2030. Never thought the kid who failed Orgo 2 would make it here, but I’m so glad I never gave up. taken in University of Miami by @michaelrobinson_13

With only 5 weeks left of undergrad, this semester might just be the best one yet 🥺. I’ve had the chance to experience so many things I never thought I would. It’s making me think I might just miss this place a little… time to finish strong and see what else is in store by @michaelrobinson_13

2024…

was one of the toughest years for me. Here comes me being vulnerable. My mom was in a coma, my aunt passed, I was sexually assaulted, and so many personal battles. Tbh, I didn’t think I was going to finish out this school year and had serious thoughts about taking a break. However, through a personal connection with God, I realized that wasn’t the path meant for me.

Through all of this, I was able to persevere and find myself in the toughest moments. Coming out of my shell and working on social anxiety and depression is something I face daily however this year I was pushed to new extremes. And in these extremes I really let go and made myself proud. From winning a research award, mentoring some of the best underclassmen, going to a music festival by myself, being a part of a COSO award win, getting nominated for an NAACP Image Award, being on the HEC committee for the first time, helping with a Palestine benefit party that raised over $2k, going to my first ever ball, starring in a short film, getting the best grades I’ve ever had, working on 3 co-authorships, getting a consistent gym and meal prep schedule, and so, so much more.

Every person (and more) featured in this long-ass reel (LMAO) has been an integral part of my life and these accomplishments, and I cannot thank y’all enough. I met and made better connections with more people than I can count this year, and while this year was rough, it’s so important to realize the moments that make life worth living. Remembering that all the downs that come with life always have ups is so important.

Here’s to 2024. And here’s to 2025, to bring more peace, more tranquility, and more fun moments.

Regret is a wasted emotion...

I definitely didn’t plan on staying in Miami over the summer. If you know me, I love being home with my dog Simba. I had never set foot in a wet lab before, never fully grasped my major, and until last year, my GPA was below a 2.5. I doubted whether I was smart enough for this program, and initially, I regretted my decision to come due to imposter syndrome. But as the days passed, I grew to LOVE research. I learned so much about science, how to adapt when things don’t go as planned (it took me five weeks to get just one cell slide right!), and how to give myself grace in all situations. Plus this cohort introduced me to the BEST PEOPLE EVER!

Someone once said, ‘Regret is a wasted emotion,’ and that quote stuck with me during those 10 weeks. Now, it’s something I will live by. I will never live in regret, and I will always push forward. I still don’t know exactly what I want to do in life—and that’s okay. The time will come. What I can say is that this research experience brought me so many blessings and I’m forever grateful for that.

What’s 9 + 10 ??? Whenever I first came to UM I cried 30 seconds after my parents left. And I definitely didn’t think I would be spending my 21st birthday here.
