This shot was a pipe dream for me. For all of the pumas myself and the @runningwildmedia expedition team saw, I was constantly calculating factors, trying to find the way that this could work. In our last hour with them, when I sprinted to the left to hit this angle, calling the team to follow, when the puma strode into this light, I couldn’t figure out what was more rewarding, that I had created a photo like this, or that I had coached others into creating this photo for themselves too. Thank you @chilevida and @ngolkoon for the incredible guiding. taken in Torres Del Paine National Park by @michaelryanclark

The polar bear density in Kaktovik, Alaska in the fall is hard to wrap one’s head around. Bears come through in the dozens, looking to feast on whale remains from the recent Inupiaq whaling harvest. It paints an inaccurate representation for the population of the species. One might think an image like this shows a robust polar bear population, but this gathering of bears is relatively new, and highlights a desperation brought on by the bears’ shrinking sea ice hunting grounds. Running out of options, these bears are pressured to interact with humans and feed on their scraps as the bear population steadily declines. Do the right thing. Vote for the planet. The boneyard.

As the Inupiaq hunters continue their tradition of sustainable whaling that goes back thousands of years, the polar bears wait patiently. Once the small village of Kaktovilk has finished their bowhead whale harvest for the year, they haul the remains a mile away from town, where polar bears converge by the dozens to feed. For polar bears spending the summer fasting, for many of them this is their first proper meal in months. This image shows a polar bear walking by hundreds of whale bones to feed on a new carcass. This image is visceral to me. It reminds me of every time I would go into this sedge field, to see a bear slowly ambling across. To be in a place with no roads, and these animals in their domain, it completes something in those who witness it, at least it does for me. I think about this place, and these bears, every day. Time with these animals enriches my life in a way that is difficult to explain. I wish I could go back and tell younger Michael he would spend so much time with these animals, but then again, I’m sure it would make me want to grow up even faster. taken in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska by @michaelryanclark
