More weight doesn’t automatically mean more stimulus for your abs.

A common misconception is that holding a weight plate in front of you while performing sit-ups makes your abs work harder. But what really matters is the resistance profile and the torque acting on your body throughout the movement.

As you raise the plate and move it over your hips, gravity can actually help pull your upper body up, making parts of the movement easier rather than harder. So you’re not necessarily increasing the demand on your abs just by adding weight.

On top of that, holding the plate overhead adds extra demands on your shoulders, arms and upper back without necessarily providing more stimulus to your abs. You’re adding complexity, fatigue and also robbing your abs of a possibly bigger muscle fiber recruitment.

A better alternative? Keep your hands behind your head throughout the movement. If bodyweight sit-ups become too easy, hold a small weight plate behind your head. This increases the lever arm and can make the movement more challenging for your abs.

The key is to understand how resistance actually works instead of assuming that adding weight automatically makes an exercise more effective.

Push-ups vs. bench press, honestly, I don’t think there’s a clear winner and its kinda stupid if someone tells you which one you should do if they dont know your goals.

Push-ups are incredibly practical. You can do them almost anywhere, they require basically no equipment, and pretty much everyone has done them at some point. They’re also easy to modify if you need to find a variation that feels comfortable or pain-free.

The bench press, on the other hand, requires a proper setup and equipment, which makes it less convenient when you’re traveling or training somewhere without a gym. But for beginners, it can actually be a great option. If you’re starting with very little strength, it’s often easier to make consistent progress, and seeing those numbers go up can be really motivating. Which is argueably one of the main things when someone starts to work out.

So both have their place — it really depends on your goal and your situation.

If your Goal is hypertrophy. Your reps must involuntarily slow down during a set. Slowing your reps down voluntarily does NOT have the same effect!

I really didnā€˜t feel too good today. I was quite nervous going for the 100kg. Nonetheless I was aiming for it for far too long to not try it.

This was probably the longest 1RM Iā€˜ve ever done and will ever do. A whole 10sec concentric.

Even though its not the cleanest rep Iā€˜m still gonna count it. My goal now is to lose some weight get back to around 83-84kg while maintaining it. So hopefully you will see me pressing 100kg again with a clean Rep! by @michaelsteinfort

Handstand push ups vs overhead press

Both have their advantages.
Overhead presses are just way more accessible. If your goal is to build muscle i would always recommend overhead press. If you main goal is to get better at handstand push ups. Do them.

From my experience the carryover from handstand pushups to overhead press is less then the other way around. So imo the more advantageous exercise is the overhead press.

Hopefully you didn’t believe that.

ā€žFunctionalā€œ is not one thing. Everything can be functional if it suits your goals.

If your goal is to build up your chest triceps and delts holding the weight with your legs surely is not functional. If for whatever reason your goal is to use your adductors while doing dips. Holding the weight like this is really functional. In my case im just an idiot who forgets his dip belt

Core training isnt significantly different from any other muscle.

Its often connected with believes and fears about injury and pain. Which makes it a bit more difficult for some.

Still the same principles apply.

Dynamic reps : aim for around 4-8 sets a week and 6-15 reps (I prefer 6-10)

Static/ isometric: aim for around 4-8 sets a week and 30-60 secs. ( I usually go from 30 up to 45 and increase weight)
You could also set a timer for 6-10 minutes and do as many 30 seconds sets as possible. Depending on your goals.

Explosive and force absorption exercises for the upper body are hard to find. These rebound push ups a great one though. Start by doing them off a small box and work your way up. At some point you can just drop forward from standing straight.

Be sure your body is prepared for it though.

Calf training is something most people including myself in the past like to neglect and just grab the genetics card. When in reality a lot of them just straight up skip it or just put 2 sets at the end of their legday.

Im not saying everyone can grow calfs as big as some 40+ year old contraction worker who never sat a foot in the gym. But you can definitely work on them and it shows if you do it or not.

Except for @the.miraclebear whose calfs just grows from doing nothing….

The term functional training is widely used in the fitness industry. Most of the time it is used to sell you some garbage training programs or personal training.

When in Reality it all depends on what your goals are. Doing squats isnt very functional if you goal is to be grow your pecs the same goes the other way around.

Think about your goals and build your programm around that. If you need help with it, hit me up. Happy to help you with it.

I’m not the biggest fan of New Year’s resolutions. I still do it though. One of the things for me are a few strength goals. Mine for this year are:
140kg RDL for 20 reps
100 or now 120kg hacksquat for 10 reps
100kg strict overhead press
1 one arm chin up

I know i will achieve some earlier than others so will have to make adjustments on the way. The end goal is to have all of them at a bodyweight of 85kg

Do you have any goals? If so what are they ?

Training to failure is something I rarely do. At least on compound movements. Especially legs are horrifying.

It is hard as fuck and takes a lot out of you.
The last weeks I usually did one of those sets per workout.

I wouldn’t recommend doing it to everyone.
People training less then 6-12 months don’t really need it and are often not capable of pushing themselves that far. Their bodies and minds shut them of beforehand.

In my experience at the ā€žintermediateā€œ to ā€žadvancedā€œ level doing one or two of those sets really help to keep going forward. Of course a lot depends on what your goals are.

Machines are a great tool for that. Since they offer a lot of stability and let you push further than free weights do.

Do you go to failure in your workouts ? What bodyparts?
