New public art! I spotted this today but couldn’t find any plaque about who created or installed it. This mini park says a lot about public space in Los Angeles. The park exists behind a locked fence — no doubt to keep out the unhoused. There is often a shantytown outside its fences. Benches in the shade of jacarandas should be a place for passersby to rest, or a destination for locals looking for some light and air (nevermind the traffic noise from Route 2, Santa Monica Boulevard. )That’s not how it is in Los Angeles, where parked cars serve that function for those who can afford them. Glad someone found a way to install a sculpture here. When I was a kid, I used to visit my grandparents who lived then above 9th Street and Broadway, right off Astor Place. I can remember trying to sleep in the little daybed (which had been my mother’s bed in her teen years). The sounds of the city kept me up. It was the days before double-pane windows and Broadway boomed, bumped , bounced, shouted through the night. The city sounds now — though restless — bring me the comfort of continuity, an illusion of permanence, in a world that is obviously falling apart. I took to the streets to walk. My kid too is enamored of the city. She likes to be out at night in Washington Square, or to stroll down Bleecker Street, likes to go to sleep to the din of city life.

New York City is probably the place in the world I feel most at home. When I was growing up in San Francisco, we used to go back every year on family visits and I was often mistaken for a New Yorker (was it my accent, or just my way of being?). I lived in NY for 18 years. My daughter was born in NY. But, I haven’t been back as much recently. That’s why it was so fulfilling to get to spend four quick days there with my kid and my parents. I would have loved to see more of you, friends and relatives who still reside in the area.

1. Manhattanhenge as seen from Union Square. 2-3. Sunset from the rooftop above my brother’s apartment in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. 4. Rollerskating flash mob on 14th and Broadway. 5. Brighton Beach. 6. My mother and my daughter in corridor of the Saarinen terminal at JFK Airport, which I had used routinely in the ‘90s to shuttle NY to CA, that is now the TWA Hotel.
