Humbled and grateful this #WorldAIDSDAY to have had the opportunity to work once again with the brilliant @kenlikebarbie to highlight the amazing work of @hanselsito and share the stories of the beautiful, inspiring, and resilient IDEA Exchange participants. Yes, that's a lot of superlatives, but they are all 100% accurate. When I told one of the participants what we were doing and why her story was so critical she squealed, "I get to help someone?!". Yes, Ms. Sarah, you get to help someone...and most definitely will.

There comes a time to speak out. To tell your story. And today is that day for me.

I’ve terminated two pregnancies. Both with people I cared deeply about. Both times were accidents. I didn’t consider it a privilege at the time to make that decision over my own body and my/our future.

I have no regrets, though I was ashamed at the time. I thought I should have known better. But the more we keep our stories a secret, the more we perpetuate the myth that “other” women have abortions.

I wouldn’t be where I am today— with a man I adore, a relationship I cherish, a fulfilling and inspiring career, without that decision. It wasn’t an easy decision but it was the right decision for me at the time, before my senior year of college and then my first year of grad school. I was and will always be grateful for the providers who cared for me, without judgement.

What is happening in Texas (and soon Florida) is maddening. It’s disgusting. It’s…I don’t even have the words. The fact that people who can bear children, and disproportionately those of color, don’t have the same right my younger self had over their own bodies and their own future is terrifying.

I am sharing my story because these laws don’t only impact other people. They impact your friends, colleagues, sisters, daughters, and partners. Me.

If you don’t want an abortion, don’t fucking have one. But let us make that decision.

Earlier this week I hugged my parents for the first time in what was way too long.

It’s not every day that you get to support (even in a small way) an important, hopefully life-saving/life-extending campaign.  But there are some days. Some special days, like the launch of my beloved Positive Spin and now today, with the launch of THE CONVERSATION/LA CONVERSACION #BetweenUsAboutUs, that I am humbled and honored to do what I do. And to work alongside people I adore and respect, like @kenlikebarbie and @jeasfo is icing on an already delicious cake.

If you or someone you know, a friend, family member, colleague, or neighbor has questions about the COVID-19 viruses, please share these videos and the website BetweenUsAboutUs.org. Videos are in English and Spanish and feature Black and Latinx health care providers.

With this campaign and all the incredible work being done to provide information and improve access to the vaccines, I hope we can all experience more hugs, like the big one I gave my mom and dad on Monday, and much less fear and illness. by @michelles_s

It was an imperfectly perfect birthday trip.
There was the sea, sun, sand, scuba, calls, texts, flowers and so much love. Yet, we lost one of our hero’s and I’m way too far from home.

Feeling this week like I’ve felt pretty much for the last six months. Fortunate. Scared. Sad. Healthy. Grateful. Repeat. taken in Islamorada, Florida by @michelles_s

A seder plate of my own. I’m supposed to be in Phoenix celebrating Passover with my family tonight. But... “There are parallels between modern psychological wisdom on coping and the framework of the seder. Experts suggest ending the day with an element of appreciation and sharing hopes for the future. While we recognize and voice the difficulty, we must frame it with looking forward positively. “This is the model we find in the seder. We tell of our enslavement and then the hope that next year we will be free. “What better model could our tradition gives us then the hope and belief that we will get through this.”

In one of the many online fitness classes I’ve taken this week (this one being @theclass which I am obsessed with) when we put our hands over our hearts, I felt and then saw my heart as a muscle. I’ve taken enough anatomy classes to know that my heart literally IS a muscle, but for the first time I saw it. I felt it.
I work up this morning and drew this heart. It’s not my typical aesthetic, but I am so proud of it. So for the next who-knows-how-long, I’m gonna be exercising this muscle big time. by @michelles_s

#stillprocessing

I don’t post much about my travels. But this trip. This trip was different. I listened to stories and saw things that changed me. I met the leader of a slum village that revolved entirely around sex workers ask us to come back Sunday to test people for HIV because that’s when the whole community will be there for a “clean up day”. I met a young gay man who had been photographed and blackmailed, and then rescued by a police officer who has dedicated his career in law enforcement to helping the most vulnerable people of his country. I met a young sex worker from Nigeria who, upon finding out she was 7 months pregnant, didn’t think she’d be able to give birth much less keep her child. Sitting there holding Rejoice, her beautiful baby girl, I knew I was changed. I was moved by their stories. I was touched by the commitment of the people we met to make a better place in some of the most unspeakable of places my almost 49 year old eyes have seen. I bore witness in a way I never had before. A social media post seems somewhat irrelevant, but I’m moved to share....because like I said, I’m still processing. taken in Ghana by @michelles_s
