Before taking shape in „Double Gaze“, Michel Pérez Pollo’s paintings begin as small clay figures hand-modelled in his studio.
⁠
Growing up in Cuba, where toys and materials were often scarce, Pérez Pollo learned to invent his own worlds by making objects with his hands. That spirit of play and resourcefulness continues to shape his practice today. The resulting paintings balance abstraction and figuration, inviting viewers to dwell between recognition and imagination.⁠

@michelperezpollo (b. 1981, Manzanillo, Cuba; lives and works in Madrid) builds his paintings from small clay models, enlarged on canvas until they hover between abstraction and figuration. In this new body of work, each form appears alongside its twin: a doubling that turns viewing into an act of comparison, and comparison into an act of attention.

I’m pleased to present Double Standard with @mai36galerie at Art Basel 2026.

Part of my ongoing Double Gaze series, the painting explores the instability of perception through the encounter of two related yet distinct forms. Rather than functioning as reflections of one another, they occupy a space of displacement, where resemblance and difference remain in constant negotiation.

Putting the final touches on Double Gaze, my upcoming solo exhibition with @mai36galerie in Zurich.

This new body of work explores the subtle distance between an image and its likeness, between repetition and transformation. Familiar forms reappear in different situations, shifting their meaning through proximity, scale and context.

Michel Pérez Pollo (born 1981 in Manzanillo, Cuba) studied at the Escuela Profesional de Artes Plásticas in Holguín and at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Recent solo shows include Timothy Taylor, New York, (2025) Timothy Taylor, London (2023), the Brownstone Foundation in Paris, France (2021) and the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba (2018). His work is held in public and private collections worldwide, including the Museo de Bellas Artes, Havana; the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio; the Centro Tomás y Valiente, Madrid; the Uli Sigg Collection, Switzerland; the Centro Espacio Arte, Panama City; El Espacio 23, Miami; the Ludwig Forum, Aachen, Germany; and the Brownstone Foundation, Paris.⁠
