Nearly 750 million people around the world still live without reliable electricity.

That is an energy challenge, but it is also a development challenge.

Reliable power allows a health clinic to keep vaccines refrigerated. It allows a child to study after sunset. It helps businesses grow, creates jobs and supports stronger economies.

At Global Citizen NOW: Perth, we are focused on the investment, partnerships and commitments needed to expand that opportunity.

Our ambition includes helping expand access to reliable and affordable electricity for up to 4 million homes, while advancing at least 2.5 gigawatts of additional renewable energy capacity.

Getting there will require investment in new energy projects and infrastructure, backed by the right policies and partnerships.

Because ultimately, this is about turning energy investment into jobs, stronger economies and better lives.

Perth is where my journey with @glblctzn began, so bringing Global Citizen NOW to Western Australia for the first time is especially meaningful.

From October 18–20, we’ll bring together leaders from across Western Australia, the Indo-Pacific and the world — from government and business to First Nations communities, philanthropy, science, sport and civil society.

Ahead of #COP31, it’s also an opportunity for Western Australia to bring its experience, ideas and ambition to a much bigger global conversation.

Whether you work in these areas, are studying them, have an idea to contribute, or are simply interested in the future of WA and the broader region, we want you to be part of it.

Great to be back home in Perth! 🇦🇺❤️

And what better way to kick things off than returning to my old high school, Clarkson Community High School, to speak with students in Years 8–10.

I’ll always be grateful for the teachers and community there who played such an important role in shaping who I am. It was pretty special to be back, sharing a little of my journey and reminding students that no matter where you start, you can make a difference.

I shared how we’re giving back to communities here in Western Australia through the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, supporting two fantastic organisations — Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation (DSF) and Teach For Australia — doing important work to improve literacy and educational opportunities for children, including in regional and remote communities. Education opened doors for me, and every child deserves that same chance, regardless of their postcode.

It was also a chance to preview @glblctzn NOW Perth next week!

One thing I’m particularly excited about is making sure young people can be part of it.

🏉 Monday 19 October, 4:15pm — We’re bringing together some incredible sporting voices, including Fremantle Dockers captain Alex Pearce, for a conversation about sport, leadership, community and giving back. We’ve deliberately scheduled it after school so students can come along!

🎶 Tuesday 20 October — Global Citizen Nights: Perth, featuring The Teskey Brothers, South Summit and Ruby Rodgers. A free concert where you can earn tickets by taking action to make a difference.

For me, Global Citizen has always been about the idea that change doesn’t just come from world leaders or big institutions. It starts in our schools, our neighbourhoods and our communities, with ordinary people deciding to get involved.

That’s a message I first learned growing up here in Perth, and one I’m proud to bring home.

So whether you’re a student, a teacher, a parent or simply someone who wants to make a difference, I’d love to see you there!

Find out more about the summit at globalcitizen.org and earn free concert tickets at globalcitizen.org/nights.

Here we go, Perth! 🙌🌏

Australia has extraordinary renewable energy resources.

The challenge is turning that potential into affordable, reliable electricity that powers homes, businesses and communities.

At @universitywa, a supporting partner of Global Citizen NOW: Perth, I spoke with Professor Christophe Gaudin, Director of @uwaoceans, about one of the less-developed frontiers of clean energy: harnessing the power of our oceans.

Through Marine Energy Research Australia, @universitywa is leading the M4 Wave Energy Demonstration Project in Albany, testing whether electricity can be generated from ocean waves while building the evidence and local capabilities needed for future commercial deployment.

Wave energy could eventually complement solar, wind and batteries, particularly in coastal and island communities where reliable, affordable electricity is essential.

But promising science alone doesn’t deliver power to communities.

The science is advancing. Policy and investment must keep pace.

This is part of the bigger challenge we’re tackling at Global Citizen NOW: Perth: expanding reliable electricity access, delivering additional renewable capacity, and accelerating the clean industries of tomorrow.

Western Australia has the researchers, resources and industrial capabilities to help lead this transition. The opportunity now is to connect them with the policies, partners and investment needed to deliver.

The first round of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is expected to reach more than 400,000 children and young people.

In Perth, I got to see part of that work up close at the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation.

For more than 40 years, DSF has helped children across Western Australia who find reading hard. With support from the Fund, DSF is creating decodable books for children who are starting to learn to read.

These are books built around the letters and sounds a child has already been taught, so they can experience the confidence of reading a full story themselves.

The stories also reflect the children’s own cultures and communities, so they can recognise themselves on the page.

Those first years of reading shape so much of what comes after.

I was one of those kids who almost fell through the cracks. I had incredible teachers, and I’m forever grateful to them.

Give children the power to read, and you give them the foundation to go as far as their potential takes them.

We’ll celebrate DSF’s work at Global Citizen NOW: Perth, 18–20 October.

Solidarity requires investment — but it also has to deliver.

During UNGA, I spoke with @jeanvanwetter of @enabel_be , the Belgian development agency, about what gives him hope in a difficult global moment.

Despite all the headlines about division and countries turning inward, people haven’t given up on working together.

A new @rockefellerfdn survey of more than 35,000 people across 34 countries found that 57% still believe their country should cooperate with other countries to solve global problems, even when that requires compromise.

But people also want cooperation to deliver. Around 8 in 10 said they would be more supportive of countries working together if they could see it actually solving problems, either globally or at home.

At a time when development budgets are under pressure, we need to show what investment actually achieves — children learning, families accessing healthcare, communities gaining electricity, and people finding economic opportunity.

Solidarity matters. But solidarity backed by investment, measurable results and accountability is how we sustain public support for it.

Thank you, Jean, for the conversation and for Enabel’s continued leadership.

Proud to see @billboard spotlight Global Citizen Nights: Perth.

On October 20, @theteskeybrothers will headline an evening of Australian music at Riverside Theatre, joined by @southsummitband and @rubyrodgersmusic.

Formed in Perth, @southsummitband will bring a distinctly local voice to the line-up and represent Western Australia’s growing music scene.

At just 17, @rubyrodgersmusic is a singer-songwriter and climate advocate using music to elevate youth perspectives on environmental action.

The event will close Global Citizen NOW: Perth, bringing music, culture and citizen action together around a practical goal: expanding access to reliable, affordable electricity for up to 4 million homes globally.

3.5 million actions. $1.01 billion in commitments.

Over six weeks, Global Citizens called on leaders to invest in education, food security, clean energy, humanitarian assistance and the protection of vulnerable communities.

Those actions had already helped mobilize $208.8 million.

Then, on behalf of Europe, europeancommission President @ursulavonderleyen announced more than $800 million to provide food, safety, shelter and healthcare for displaced communities, while strengthening emergency assistance for people affected by war, disease and natural disasters.

That brought the campaign total to $1.01 billion.

The total includes commitments from governments, international institutions and philanthropists, including @surreysarai, @presidentjuliusmaadabio, President Taye Atske Selassie, @dpmsomalia, @tonyrobbins, @iomchief and @ed_miliband.

Ten African governments also collectively pledged approximately $9 million to @ifad_org, with every participating country increasing its previous contribution.

The commitments have been made. Now comes the real test: ensuring the funding is delivered and translated into measurable results.

—

Earlier this year, we landed in Rio for the first-ever Rio Nature & Climate Week, bringing Global Citizen NOW and Global Citizen Live to the Cidade Maravilhosa during a milestone week of climate discussions, convening, and impact.

Although extreme weather kept us from making this exciting announcement onstage at Global Citizen Festival: NYC last weekend, we're thrilled to share that Rio Nature and Climate Week is returning in 2027! Consider this your official invite from Mayor @eduardo.cavaliere to the second annual Rio Nature & Climate Week, where leaders will convene to turn global climate commitments into locally led results.
