So this guy has made TWENTY laps around the sun, which is wild, cause aren’t I only on number 21? 🤪

There isn’t much that he loves more in this world then being able to share the things he loves with the people that are around him, so if you guessed that he’s absolutely spending part of his birthday teaching, you’d be correct.

Fun fact about this song: His high school marching band does one alumni game every fall where any of the graduates can come back and play, and this was the song their director picked. James wrote a marimba part. The night of the game, I think nerves took over, and the band ended up playing at half speed. He came off the field and went “I wouldn’t have put so much work into it if I’d known THAT was about to happen.” 😂

Anyway, if you have a way to reach him directly, reach out and gas him up a little bit, otherwise, you know what to do.

I always like to tell a story when I’ve got one, and I did inquire about a couple, but this time the story is kind of me. 😂 I would like to be moving into more of a content creator space in the drum line world, and something my portfolio has a woeful lack of is pictures. Because I love a #FrontEnsemble and mallets are really hard to take pictures of! 😩😆

Fortunately, our friends at @motorcitypa welcomed me to come out for their summer clinic and sharpen my own skills. I did still have some blurry shots, art is very subjective as we all know 🤪 but they were very gracious hosts and photography models. Always good to come out and see my talented friends!

I read that this was the largest clinic MCPA has hosted, and there’s still time to get in to their clinic for September, @motorcitypercussion , @lakeeffectpercussion and @dripercussion will have all the information you need to register. Hope to see you there!

I’m going to continue this caption across multiple slides, cause it is a tale. Here we go!

I spent a lot of time online this season defending the Seattle Cascades. James was in their Front during their “Primary” show in 2025. Because of multiple conversations that we’d had, I knew that he was looking at DCI as a resume builder, so he was going in very aware that that meant he may not be returning to a corps year over year.

I volunteered during Seattles spring training in 2025 and met one of the other kids in the corps, a Baritone player named Dylan.

Dylan was very proud of the fact that he was starting his third season in Seattle, and I asked what had made him come back. I remember the conversation vividly, because I’d been really surprised by the answer.

Dylan told me that his first season in Seattle had been 2023. And he’d walked away from that season feeling like it’d gone so terribly - and if you know why, don’t tell me, and if you don’t know, we’re not speculating - that he felt like he needed to protect anyone that would come up after him, and he returned to Seattle to ensure that no one that came after him would have the season that he’d had. By the end of the 2024 season, he’d fallen in love with the people and the culture of Seattle, and he’d go on to Age Out with Seattle in 2026.

Everybody starts somewhere. And everyone comes from someplace. And Seattle is going to go on to become a really important stop on the musical journey for anyone that came through there.

And what they don’t deserve is for anyone to dunk on that. If we want to see the activity grow, then we all need to protect it for the players coming up. Put the energy out into the activity that you want to see come back. Like a post. Buy a hoodie. Teach a kid coming up. Be the change. 💜💛

The lot videos were taken on August 6, the video from the field was taken August 7. Disclaimer; I did tell this story with Dylan’s blessing, and to my knowledge he isn’t visible in any of the footage.

I was sitting next to (I assume) a fellow Band Mom at the Michigan State Championships this April, and that poor woman. 😆 I make fun of myself for how much I cheer - as always, my loyalties are little secret - and I was tap dancing on this poor womans last actual nerve. @performredline would be doing Redline Things (trademark, probably 😉), I’d cheer and she’d jump. For like ten full minutes. I probably shot her anxiety into the stratosphere by minute three. 😂 But by the end, she’d decided I might be on to something, cause she wanted to know every single detail I knew. Who Redline is (uh, awesome), where they’re from (Plymouth, Michigan), and how you make the group (watch for their audition information presumably soon!) I hope to Band Mom with her one day! 👊🏻

I posted about #BandMomLife last week, and it bummed me to see how many people that message seemed to hit with. My services are for hire. I’ll band mom for you, and maybe only scare one or two people that sit near me. It’s fine. It’s fine! 😂😂

I’m turning today’s #ThrowbackThursday into a teachable moment.

Algorithms being what they are, once you show a like for a topic, social media brings you ALL of that topic, all the time. I keep getting variations on “I’m a new band mom, what do I do?”

My answer? You help the band. Always help the band.

It doesn’t matter your age, physicality or even financial situation, there’s a way for you to help. In fact, most commonly at the high school level, if you help the band, you get in to the event for free! 🙌🏻

Push a prop. Push an instrument. Build a prop! Buy some merch! Buy the kids dinner on a competition day! Make the kids dinner on competition day! If you can sew, they’ve got something for you to do too.

And I can’t believe I’ve gotta say this one, but at the absolute least? Talk to your kid. Learn about what they’re doing. I’ve talked to multiple kids that their parents hadn’t even done *that*. You don’t have to come pre-armed with knowledge, they will teach you! 😂

And now that I’ve made this caption almost as long as this video, that’s what I’ve got for today. No one endears themselves to my heart quite as fast as a kid in a band, and we always help the band. 😉

So I spent a lot of today whittling down videos for a #tbt post, and in the end decided I wasn’t in the mood to post any of the videos I’d narrowed down to anyway, cause life be like that sometimes. 😆

Another fact about #drumline that you may not know - it takes a fleet of instructors to get a line to the floor. And because there’s a finite group of people that can teach at the World Class level…boy, when you find the good ones, you hang on with both hands. 💙🩷

One of the good ones, possibly the best one 😍 is @performredline s Visual Caption Head, @akashwatsa . The night of #WGIFinals2026 , Akash gave the group a very lovely speech, and talked about how special of a group the 2026 Redline team was, and what a marvel it was, that just by sheer force of will and determination, they’d basically grabbed the Redline name and drug it up by the collar. It’d been a minute since Redline made it to Saturday night in Dayton, and they all just collectively went “Yes. We are doing that.” And DID 👏🏻 IT 👏🏻

And you know how when Dan Campbell came to Detroit, it was a running joke that the players were so loyal to him that they’d run through a brick wall for him if he asked?

…I’m pretty sure Redline feels that way about Akash. 😆 He’s Redlines Dan Campbell. 😆💙🩷

Happy @dciphotos Move In Week, to all who observe! I know I have many friends who already have, or are about to, or in one case, will in a couple of weeks. 🤔 Can’t wait to see and hear all about it over the season!

I’ve seen a lot of lot videos that I believe I’ve traced back to the Lots at Prelims in Dayton, featuring @performredline and their amazing #Battery where you could hear the front in the background. Now, my love of a #FrontEnsemble is pretty well documented here (and pretty expected, probably 😉) but I’ve noticed that by fluke, I came pretty dang close to having the exact same pieces videoed, just in reverse, you can see the Front and hear the Battery in mine. 😂😂

Wild Fact - this was in the University of Dayton parking lot on April 16, 2026. There was 30mph wind in Dayton during this practice. 🤪

One of these days, I’m gonna master wanting to cheer, while not eating the microphone. 😆 Heads up (especially if you’re wearing earbuds!) it was not this day. 😂 This is from the first round at WGI Regional+ in Indianapolis, a new comp for @performredline this season, and one they left very excited with their standing. (Video March 14, 2026).

I have content with a new purpose today! I added a link in my bio for James’ member account for the Colts, the group he is absolutely thrilled to be competing with this summer on the DCI tour.
